About

Big Dumb Object is a blog about Science Fiction that was started 242 internet years ago and covers anything to do with Science Fiction, where Science Fiction is taken in the broadest possible sense.

It's run by James Bloomer. I will now stop talking in the third person because it confuses me.

Things you might like to know about me:
  • Star Wars was the first film I saw at the cinema.
  • I have a PhD in Particle Physics (my experiment was at CERN).
  • I started blogging when only Pro-Blogger had titles for posts.
  • I write Science Fiction too, see here for more details.

If you want me to plug/review something, here are the rules:

  1. Be honest. If you want me to plug stuff on here, just be honest and tell me, and if I like it I will. However, saying "I just found this cool website/book you might like it" makes me immediately suspicious. If you're in the marketing department, just tell me.
  2. Sending me free stuff increases your chance, but if I don't like it I probably still won't mention you.
  3. It has to be SF. If it's not SF it has to be something totally amazing to get mentioned.
  4. If it's cool enough I'll find it anyway. If you have the coolest SF site on the planet the chances are that I'll find it anyway, eventually, so just chill.
  5. Everything can change. It's my blog so I can do what I like.
  6. Time may be your enemy. There's one of me, I have one head, two hands and not enough time. I might like what your plugging but just not have enough time to read, watch or play it. Please don't take it personally.

james, what do you think of my idea of coining a new word - screening -- to stand for reading on a screen, in order to differentiate what we do when we read on paper? What's your take?

I was reading a comment about Battlestar Galactica, and was shocked to see that the person making the post, had used the pseudonym 'Sambo'. Maybe you should make some effort to screen out the use of racist language on your website.

I haven't ever screened usernames of commenters, or in fact comments (unless they were spam).

For all we know the user could be referring to a martial art en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambo_(martial_art) or his name is Sam?

What a ridiculous comment, there is a brand of cheese here in Australia called "Coon" are you going to say it should be taken off the shelves because that is racist too?

Some years back, I got to spend a couple hours talking to Russel Means, who's a Sioux, political activist, onetime Libertarian presidential candidate, and probably the only guy I've ever met who actually took arms against the US government. This was during the whole "They're Native Americans, Indians is Racist" thing.

I asked Mr. Means what he thought of it, and he said "I prefer to be called an Indian" for religious reason (!) and went on to say that he thought the "Native American" lable was in fact racist because it implied primitivism and that "Normal" Americans were somehow evolved from or superior to the "Natives."

I'm with Jon and James and Means: Just forget all this overly-PC crud and be polite and respectful. I think being friendly carries a lot more weight than being officious and orthodox
