Game Reviews - Number One - Fallout 3

Current mood: geeky

Recently I've been trying to think of a way that I can actively contribute towards the UG Community, largely inspired by the thread ZeGuitarist has started in the Pit.

Unfortunately my ability to record is virtually none existant, so I decided the best way in which I could produce some worthy content, was either through art, or through blogging. I chose blogging, but the art might sneak it's way in if I can produce something relevant and worthy! spacer

And with that brief introduction out of the way, here we go! The first in a series of Gaming Reviews!

Just remember that the games I review here won't always be new releases, they'll tend to be on whatever game it is that I'm playing at the moment, and unless stated otherwise, they'll be the 360 version!

With this and all future reviews, be aware that there will more than likely be some minor plot spoilers.

FALLOUT 3

Fallout 3 is the latest entry in the fallout series, which originated back on the PC in 1997, when the sequel to the 1988 game "Wasteland" was released.

The events of Fallout 3 occur in the year 2277, 36 years after the events of Fallout 2, and 200 years after the nuclear apocalypse that reduced the world to it's current state.

The story begins with the birth of a child, and the introduction plays out as snippets of the first 19 years of the childs life in Vault 101, including a birthday party, and a Generalised Occupation Aptitude Test.

At the end of the introduction, everything shatters as your father leaves Vault 101, causing an upset that causes the Vault 101 Overseer to attempt to hunt you down. You escape with the help of a friend, and thus begin your adventure in the desolt wastelands that once was Washington D.C, now known as the Capital Wasteland, attempting to hunt your father down, and find out exactly why he left the safety and sanctuary of Vault 101....

GRAPHICS

Fallout 3 uses a modified version of the Gamebryo engine that was used to power Oblivion, and as such, there are only minor graphical improvements over Oblivion.

However, the colour palette and design work that has been worked on for Fallout has lead to a vast play area that, even though it's the aftermath of a Nuclear Apocalypse, really feels vibrant and alive.

It doesn't really weigh up to modern releases like Final Fantasy 13, but the graphics are more than good enough to allow for a really effective and immersive role playing experience.

GAMEPLAY

For anyone familiar with the way that Oblivion plays, you can expect a pretty familiar experience with Fallout 3.

The game sits you down in the middle of a vast play area, with a vague indication of where the main story leads you, however, you're completely free to forge your own path.

The game plays in the standard FPS way, with the only difference being the inclusion of V.A.T.S (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System), which freezes time, allowing you to target specific areas of an enemy, complete with a read out showing how likely you are to strike.

So, in a nutshell, expect plenty of exploration, coupled with plenty of combat with various types of mutants, and insane wasteland survivors.

SOUND

There are many awesome aural pleasures to be found whilst exploring the Capital Wasteland.

Whilst the atmospheric sounds used to flesh out the Wasteland do a fantastic job of allowing the Wasteland to spring to life in your ears, the real beauty of Fallout 3's audio lies in the music that's broadcast over the Wasteland via the various radio signals that can be found throughout the world.

Consisting of various tunes hand-picked from the 1950's, the soundtrack does an excellent job of capturing the "retro" aspect of Fallout 3's "retro-futuristic" vibe.

OVERALL

Overall, I'd highly recommend Fallout 3 to anybody looking to sink a few weeks into exploring a highly detailed and wonderfully realised game world, and would rank it as one of this generation of consoles "Must Play" titles.

SCORE: 9/10
GRAPHICS: 7/10
AUDIO: 8/10
GAMEPLAY: 9/10

AVAILABLE ON: PC, 360, PS3.

The PC version comes the most recommended if you have the hardware to play it, as the community mods that are available increase the content of the game tenfold.

*WARNING* The PS3 version features multiple bugs, including freezing and crashes. It's still a wonderful game, but be prepared to deal with a few issues.

The Graphics in this game are very good, Final Fantasy 13 doesn't get even close.
The game engine has been improved a lot over Oblivion "there are only minor graphical improvements over Oblivion.." - take a closer look!! Even if they used the same engine, it doesn't mean the graphics are the same (exp: Half-Life 1:Source - looks like shit, but search for Half-Life 2 fakefactory's release).
But I have to admit I haven't played it on 360, only on PC with max graphics + some mods to get the textures higher than any other game - even Crysis.
(So, hmmm... I think I made my point.)
Was a great and interesting game...

I liked this game a lot...more than the usual RPG I reckon. The theme is probably what got me into it. Anyway, good review man.

Yeah, any reviews I do aren't going to take into account any mods that are available, I'll only be looking at the "Vanilla" versions of the game, and in that respect, there are only a few improvements over Oblivion.

Cheers for the feedback though guys!

I played it a couple of times but the story and the overall character aren't doing it for me. It never pulled me in like oblivion did. Also i find combat very Annoying. Mabye it is just me but what is the deal with this game?.

I've been playing this game a lot recently. It really is brilliant, but it really entirely depends if you're into the whole sandbox thing. A friend of mine complained tht he didn't really know where to go, but that's one of the beauties of the game for me, the same as Oblivion.

I've got two characters which I play as: one with which i've completed the main questline, and the second, my favourite, with which I've ignored the most part of the main quest and have spent my time exploring, completing other side quests and collecting the Bobbleheads hidden throughout the game.

This is definately one of my favourite games, and the downloadable content is great too.

No mention of how the game ends itself when you complete the main quest and the level cap at 30? I thought both of these things marred the basic version of the game. Of course, if you have it on PC, the expansion packs will solve these niggles and add a hell of a lot more to the game besides.

Till now Fallout 3 is still my favorit game of all time. I've played it vanilla and with alot of mods too. And I actually can tell you that these mods (gameplaymods as well) can push the awesomness of this game to a higher level. The same applies to Oblivion. It's simply said, a complete new game after you modded it the right way.

The graphics only suck on the xbox because of the xboxs limitations. Its much better on PC because it doesnt have to make tradeoffs such as gameplay for graphics. And this has one of the best audio i've ever heard in a game. How dare you give the inklings an 8! -Crazed threatening fist wave-

Its called storyline. It would make no sense if you lived pre-expansion pack. You die because the overall theme of the game is sad and based on heroism. And if the level cap was any higher you would kill everything and get bored.

The storyline pulled me in WAY more then oblivion did. I felt this game was much more about story then oblivion (hence the shorter game with less side quests) And yes a lot of the charecters that arent main quest charecters are very very very flat... and how do u not like combat? vats makes me want to piss my pants in amazement every single time i do it. Maybe your just trying to combat out of vats to much?

Ands thats my fallout defense rant.

I have to say, Fallout 3 is one of my all-time favorite games. I still loves blastin Super Mutants heads into small semi-identifiable pieces, and watchin Raiders limbs come off at will, not to mention the karma system! For some reason I always stayed very evil...

quote

Unicronus wrote on Nov 4th, 2010 2:21am

I love fallout 3 but the one problem you forgot to mention is the level cap. That really pissed me off. That is one of the main reasons I like Oblivion a lot more. I didnt like the leveling system at all in Fallout 3. They should have stuck with Oblivions in my opinion.

This is the greatest game of all time. With the graphics, your main complant is invalid. This game was already pretty old at the time that this was written, and graphics advanced significantly in the time between the release of this game and this review.

Great review for a game I didn't think to be amazing (though Oblivion is one of my favourite games, probably my favourite RPG) because of the shooting part of it.
