Payload Extractor Update: Version 1.2
This update is really just a bunch of behind the scenes stuff, but the overall result is, you will be able to open and extract certain things that weren’t appearing before, following the app’s philosophy that you should be able to see and extract everything in a PKG file, without knowing what’s happening behind the scenes.
Some PKGs are recursive, meaning meaning when decompressed they contain even more PKGs. Where before, Payload Extractor would open a PKG containing more PKGs and simply open the first one, now it will open all of them. It also has the ability now to open these inner child packages, in case you happen to come across one. Download here.
I’d also like to mention that this update was made because a user asked, so if you are missing something in one of our applications, drop us a line!
I use this tool along with Suspicious Package, a PKG plug-in for QuickLook, to see when packages are installing more than I want them too, and skipping the parts I don’t need.
Resistance Update: MP3 Search Engine
Downloading songs from Youtube videos is a really neat feature, but a couple annoying things about this are 1) the download is slow due to the fact that you are downloading audio and video and 2) the audio quality is pretty bad. That’s why in Resistance 1.1 we’ve added a new music source: Soundcat.ch. After looking through various mp3 search engines, I chose Soundcat for it’s simplicity, it’s lack of duplicates, and it’s lack of false search results. It’s definitely one of the better mp3 search engines out there.
Here’s what it looks like, Resistance + Soundcat.ch:
This update comes along with a few improvements to the interface, increased stability, and a smaller application file size. It’s available here, or through the in-app update feature.
Introducing Resistance
A long ways back I gave you a peek at new music player we’ve been working on. This project combines a full-fledged (but minimalistic) music organizer/player with a music downloader to harness the vast source of free music which is the internet. I’m glad to announce that after a long vacation, the wheels are back in motion and we’re releasing version 1.0 of Resistance today.
As far as downloading music, we’re starting with YouTube. In a way, this feature is very much like shopping for music on the iTunes store, except since it’s YouTube, it’s free, and the audio quality isn’t quite as good.
Resistance's iTunes Store style download section
Resistance also has a couple other large advantages over iTunes. It’s a lot faster, due to the fact that iTunes is an 11-year-old Carbon app relying on a lot of legacy code, whereas Resistance is entirely Cocoa. It also has support for third party codec plugins, based on the Cog audio player engine. This means that by installing plugins you can, and we will, add support for Ogg Vorbis, Flac, Monkeys Audio, etc.
There are many good things left in store for the development of Resistance, which I hope you’ll have your say in by sending us a note. The most exciting of which will be more sources of music. You can find more info about Resistance and download the app here.
