Mentoring

Mentors Needed!

We need several new mentors to work with protégés. Read more about how you can become a mentor, and contact mentoring program manager Mollye Barrett if you’re interested.

How You Can Participate

The Wisconsin Chapter encourages all technical communication professionals to participate in the Mentoring program. Participants currently include students interested in learning more about technical communication as well as new and experienced technical communication professionals. Guidelines to help mentors and protégés get the most out of their experience are provided on this site, and participants are always free to contact us with questions and suggestions.

To participate, please fill out the appropriate form; the form will be forwarded to the Mentoring Program Committee so you can be matched with other members.

Special Events

Career development meetings, aside from the regularly scheduled STC program meetings, are planned to facilitate teaching and learning among all participants, not just in the one-to-one relationship built between mentor and protégé. Meetings include special speakers, workplace visits and tours, a mentoring progression, collecting stories from chapter members about their most unusual or challenging job or project and creating a member mentor base.

Mentoring Program: Past, Present, and Future

The mentoring program started in 1999 to encourage the development and learning between both professional technical communicators and students. Our initial focus was to attract prospective members and facilitate ongoing learning for all members. The program helped the Chapter reach local academic institutions to build awareness of the technical communication profession and increase the number of skilled, experienced technical communicators participating in the Chapter. Our Chapter received a grant from the Society to support the mentoring program. This year the Chapter continues to grow the mentoring program by renewing existing contacts with mentors and protégés.
