What is SUmail?
Official Syracuse University email accounts for students are established in a system called SUmail.
SUmail is managed by the University and utilizes Microsoft's Live@edu email service. This partnership provides students several powerful and convenient features, including:
- 10 GB inbox and 18 MB attachments
- Optimized Outlook experience including customizable user interface
- Shared calendar and contacts
- Message tracking
- Folders to organize email
- Forwarding, POP3, IMAP, and Outlook Connector for mobile phone and personal computer access
- Spam and virus protection
- Keep your email address after you graduate
As a registered SUmail user, you'll be able to take advantage of other Live@edu services at no cost, including:
- Windows Live SkyDrive (up to 25GB of online storage)
- Windows Live Messenger
- Windows Live Spaces (for collaboration)
- Windows Live Photo Gallery
- Web Versions of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and OneNote (documents created are stored in your SkyDrive by default)
- Microsoft's support for these services.

Log into SUmail
Go to SUmail.syr.edu
Note: SUmail utilizes Microsoft's Live@edu services. When asked for your "Windows Live ID" or user name, use your official SU email address (NetID@syr.edu). Use the same password you set up for your SU NetID.
Compatible browsers
To access SUmail, use the following browsers:
- Windows - Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox
- Macintosh - Safari or Mozilla Firefox
- Blackberries, iPhones and some other mobile devices can also be configured for SUmail
SUmail Setup
Using other email programs with SUmail
Many people manage their SUmail incoming and outgoing email directly through the SUmail Web interface.
If you use a third-party email package to access your SUmail account, please review this important information: Using SUmail with other Email Packages (i.e. Outlook, Apple Mail, etc.)
You can Redirect / Forward your SUmail. If you're using another program to get your email, and considering redirecting your SUmail account to that other program, we encourage you to use SUmail for a while and get familiar with its features before you decide to redirect your mail.
University Email Policy
The SU email policy requires that all official University email communications be sent to your @syr.edu email address. If you choose to re-direct your @syr.edu email to another account, such as @gmail.com or @yahoo.com, you do so at your own risk.
