Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert DeNiro team up for Killer Elite

12 May 2011, 4:10pm | No Commented From This Post

Open Road Films has acquired all U.S. distribution rights to Omnilab Media’s film Killer Elite, an action thriller starring Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert DeNiro and directed by Gary McKendry. Financed by Omnilab Media, the film was produced by Michael Boughen through Omnilab’s Australian production arm, Ambience Entertainment alongside Sigurjon Sighvatsson, Steve Chasman, and Tony Winley. Killer Elite is slated for a fall 2011 release nationwide and will be the first film for the newly launched U.S. distribution venture Open Road Films.

Inspired by true events, Killer Elite is an action adventure spy film following Danny (Jason Statham), one of the world’s most skilled special-ops agents. Lured out of self-imposed exile to execute a near-impossible feat of retribution and personal salvation, Danny reassembles his old team of operatives to help rescue his former mentor (Robert DeNiro), and to penetrate the highly feared and respected military unit, the British Special Air Service (SAS). Facing off against a covert group of ex-SAS soldiers known as “The Feather Men,” who, under their leader Spike (Clive Owen), provide a deadly cloak of security around all SAS members, Danny and his team must take down a rogue cell of solider assassins before their actions result in a global political meltdown.

Killer Elite’s whirlwind action crosses the globe from Australia to Paris, Wales, London, Dubai and Oman. The story is based on Sir Ranulph Fiennes’ controversial non-fiction novel “The Feather Men.”

Open Road Films CEO Tom Ortenberg stated, “Killer Elite is a fantastic, adrenaline-rush movie with a stellar cast. As one of the highest profile, big budget independent films available for the US, I am thrilled to have Killer Elite as Open Road’s premiere release and to extend my long-standing relationship with the team at Omnilab.”

Killer Elite will be released nationwide in fall 2011 in over 2000 theatres, supported by over $25 million in P&A. The project will be overseen at Open Road Films by Ortenberg and newly minted President of Marketing, Jason Cassidy. The acquisition nearly completes all worldwide sales for the title following the initial strong pre-sales closed by the film’s sales agent, Inferno Entertainment.

Omnilab’s Managing Director Christopher Mapp said, “In Open Road Films we’ve found a fantastic partner to bring Killer Elite to American audiences. Their distribution model is one of the most exciting in the marketplace and we are looking forward to an incredibly productive partnership with Tom and his team.”

The deal was negotiated on behalf of Open Road by Ortenberg, General Counsel and Executive Vice President of Operations and Business Affairs Elliott Kleinberg and Senior Vice President of Acquistions Ben Cotner, and by Executive Producers Matthew Street and Peter D. Graves on behalf of Omnilab Media.

Founded earlier this year by AMC Entertainment Inc. (AMC) and Regal Entertainment Group (Regal), the two largest theatrical exhibition and entertainment companies in the United States, Open Road Films is a dynamic, acquisition-based domestic theatrical distribution company.

Clive Owen: An actor who puts art above money

19 Apr 2011, 9:11am | No Commented From This Post

You never know where you’ll see Clive Owen next.

He might be best known for portraying tough guys not afraid to get their hands dirty in films such as “Children of Men,” “Sin City” and “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead.” But the ruggedly handsome actor has also played the sensitive father in movies such as “The Boys Are Back” and his latest, in limited release now, “Trust.” He’s been leading man in more traditional thrillers “The International” and “Duplicity.” He can suit up in period costume, as he proved in “King Arthur” and “Elizabeth: The Golden Age.” And he got an Oscar nomination for playing the foul-mouthed dermatologist Larry in the gripping emotional drama “Closer.”

He might have been typecast from the get-go. He first came to Hollywood’s attention, after a successful run on British television, with Mike Hodges’ film “Croupier,” in which he played the title character, an aspiring novelist whose job at a casino introduces him to the underworld. It didn’t take long for him to become — in the public’s mind, at least — the leading candidate for the new James Bond. Read the rest of this entry »

Clive Owen For New James Marsh Movie

13 Apr 2011, 3:32am | No Commented From This Post

Clive Owen and Andrea Riseborough are to star in the new film by James Marsh, the Oscar-winning documentary maker of Man on Wire.

The versatile director is to tackle an IRA espionage thriller for his next feature film, having previously directed Gael García Bernal and Paul Dano in The King. The untitled project was previously known as Shadow Dancer (the title of the Tom Bradby novel it’s based on), but is currently inbetween titles, Marsh told NY Mag.

He confirmed the casting of Owen and Riseborough, the rising British actress who’s appeared in Made In Dagenham, Never Let Me Go and Brighton Rock. They replace Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall, who were attached to the film last November. Also joining the cast are Queer as Folk and The Wire star Aidan Gillen, currently scaring us to death in superb horror Wake Wood, and X-Files legend Gillian Anderson.

Marsh revealed that the film will be similar to his stint on the Red Riding Trilogy (the 1980 part): “It’s a genre film, it’s a thriller. It’s very exciting to be doing something like that now, to have that kind of canvas to fill.”

Centered around the peace process in Northern Ireland in the Nineties, Riseborough will play a former IRA terrorist forced to turn informer, and Owen will play her MI5 handler. Filming will begin in Dublin this May.

Marsh’s next documentary Proejct Nim, about a chimpanzee taught to live as a human in the Seventies, will be released this year.

Owen to star in IRA spy thriller

8 Apr 2011, 1:49pm | No Commented From This Post

The film is based on the novel ‘Shadow Dancer’ by Tom Bradby, and will be helmed by ‘Man On Wire’ director James Marsh, reports website Movieweb.

Marsh told the site: “It’s a genre film, it’s a thriller. It’s very exciting to be doing something like that now, to have that kind of canvas to fill.”

Andrea Riseborough will play the female lead – former IRA terrorist turned MI5 informer Colette McVeigh.

Also starring in the movie will be ‘Love/Hate’ actor Aidan Gillen and ‘X Files’ actress Gillian Anderson.

‘Shadow Dancer’ will begin production in and around Dublin in May, although it is likely to be released with a different title.

Marsh said: “It’s sort of between titles right now. I don’t think it’s quite the right title. It sounds a bit like Billy Elliot or something like that.”
