Avaaz Syria update

At least 9 killed in Lattakia and 10 in Homs as army continues its attack on peaceful protesters

Lattakia
Avaaz citizen journalists reported the names of 9 people killed in the city today. Mohammed Rasim (23) was shot in the neck by security forces in the southern district of Alraml during a protest last night. He died today. The Palestinian Nada Hassan Saad (22) was also killed due to indiscriminate army shelling, also in the district of Alraml.
The towns of Slaiba and Alawaina as well as the Alsagha and Hananou markets also witnessed heavy shelling. Residents and businesses in Alraml also carried out a general strike in support of the cities besieged by the security forces and the military.
The neighborhoods of Alraml were shelled using heavy artillery today. Activists said that security forces had to clean the main road adjacent to the camp which was laden with bullets. They have also removed the bodies in anticipation of a visit planned by international organisations concerning the Palestinian refugees. Activists also stressed that security forces stormed the area of Ashrafieh in Lattakia and fired heavily on the town.
Security forces and Shabiha also raided the town of Alsaliba and Altabiyat later on the same day. Security forces fired heavily on homes located along Port Said Street.

Homs
The city of Homs and surrounding areas experienced a bloody time in the early hours of this morning, resulting in the death of at least 10 people, who were killed by security forces after they left
al-Khalidiya mosque and formed a protest. Demonstrations were held after morning prayers in al-Khalidiya today. The parents mourned the death of those who were killed during the early hours of the morning.
Avaaz citizen journalists said security forces launched a wave of arrests and raided houses in Alzeer street, in the neighborhood of Albayada amid heavy firing. Witnesses confirmed that security forces were being supported by local undercover agents, who helped direct security forces to the homes of activists.

Damascus suburbs
A heavy security deployment in the town of Altal, in the countryside close to Damascus, carried out mass arrests in early this morning. Eyewitnesses in Altal reported a green army bus filled with detainees drive through the town.

Shabiha and security forces raided worshipers in the mosque of Anas in the town of Darya. They searched their identities before allowing them to exit the mosque. They also arrested a number of them who were on their list of wanted activists.

In Duma several demonstrations started after dawn prayers in solidarity with the besieged cities of Lattakia and Homs. Citizen journalists reported that security forces set up a number of checkpoints within the city during the day. They have also confirmed the arrival of more security forces and military in the city.

Damascus
Security forces and Shabiha carried out a campaign of mass arrests in the neighborhood of Qaboun. They also raided several houses in the neighborhood of Almathana near the school of Jaber al-Ansar.

Hama
Security forces this morning stormed the area of the city south of the stadium, where they arrested dozens of young people, mainly men. Among them were Hamza Rahwan, Dr. Kamal Al Ashqar, and Dr. Mustafa Orob.
Security forces also carried out arrest raids in the neighborhood of Kazuo where over a dozen families were targeted.

Avaaz CJ “Sami” filed this report from central Hama today:

“They shot at the demonstrators last night, and there are some injuries. We could not tell whether it was the security forces or the Shabiha, as they all wear plain clothes.

“Today people are afraid to go out of their homes. I only go  to the nearest shop to buy basic items. Half of the shops are not open. They could not restock the shops because of the level of destruction of both markets and homes. There has been a lot of looting, with army trucks breaking down the doors of people’s homes and also markets, and destroying what they can’t get, sometimes even burning the buildings down.

“The demonstrations yesterday were modest. 50-100 people congregated around the mosques but because they were shot at, the numbers diminished. Most of the firing was happening during iftar and especially during prayers to discourage people from leaving the house. The word is that the arrests and shooting will continue. The army is still in Hama and they are shooting indiscriminately, even sometimes just to joke around.”

“The dire humanitarian situation had improved today, compared to how it was at the beginning of Ramadan when we went for three days without eating. Food aid is coming through from the countryside around Hama. The hospitals, however, have been destroyed. Al-Hourani hospital was destroyed and Al-Rayes hospital near al-Hourani was shelled by tanks. The medical equipment was destroyed. Many people are dying of their injuries.

“Children have been putting toys at their doors to create barricades in order for the army not to come in. Troops are writing on the walls of the town word that are blasphemous in the time of Ramadan. For example, ‘there is only one God and Assad is his messenger’. They steal our houses, arrest us, you kill our children, and now you are writing phrases and words that is extremely offensive to us. They are using the Hadith Sharif to describe Bashar, as if he is something holy. They stopped a 15-year-old boy and forced him to say “Bashar is my God”. He refused, so they slashed him with a machete.

“People just want Bashar to leave - they are determined. They can stay without food, water, electricity for a month, they just want him to leave. We are ready to pay any price just to see him out.”

Among those arrested today in Hama are:
El Hajj Omar Algbash / Wood dealer
Khaled Hassan / Free lancer.
Haj Mohammad Ali Hassan Abu Hazim / retired employee
Hazem Alhassan / college student
Ayman Alhassan young /  Undergraduate student
Young Amer Alwan / Free Lancer.
Young Mustafa Alwan / Free lancer.
Young Ahmed Alwan / driver
Young Samer Alwan / Free lancer.
Young Husam Alwan / driver
Young Maher Alwan / employee

Young Mahmoud Mohsen / driver
Young Ammar Alzakar / free lancer
Haji Abdul Basit Ahmad / employee
Young Osama Shaban / free lancer

Residents flee their homes as tanks bombard Lattakia, killing 21

Avaaz Syria update

Residents flee their homes as tanks bombard Lattakia, killing 21

Hotspots

Lattakia
We have 21 names so far of people killed in Lattakia today. At least 49 have been injured including six women and seven children. In the early hours of this morning the military started to shell residential neighbourhoods in the city for several hours. Dozens of homes were raided and looted, with a large number arrested.
The town of Altabiyat witnessed a mass exodus of families fleeing their homes, after their homes no longer remained safe due to security forces and the Shabiha indiscriminately shooting in the streets. Snipers have also been spread on the rooftops of high buildings and are targeting anything that moves. The army stormed the neighborhood of Jaffa and Ein el-Ghazal in the Palestinian camp today. Using loudspeakers they ordered residents to evacuate their homes, giving them one hour to do so and threatening to destroy their houses. They declared that anyone remaining would be seen as a saboteur. The security forces also launched a wave of arrests, targeting young people trying to flee the city, detaining dozens. A muezzin (some one who calls people to prayers) was killed today in the Elgharaf mosque in Lattakia, while he was on the way to the mosque to announce the prayers.
A general strike took place in the towns of Saliba, Alquwatli, Alashrafieh, Altaabiyat, Alhanano Street, the neighborhood of Alqalaa and Alaweyna. Alharash Street was also closed off from both ends, and the army set up checkpoints at all roads leading into Lattakia, conducting thorough searches on cars and detaining a large number of young people.
Avaaz citizen journalists also reported the death of the young activist Ahmed Sufi, who was hit by a nail bomb. Half of his face was ripped off in the blast, and his right hand and fingers of his left hand were amputated, before being pronounced dead. The Shabiha and security forces cut off the roads leading to Ugarit from all sides in order to tighten control of the besieged areas in Lattakia, knowing that there is little or no activity in the area. The town of Alraml in Lattakia witnessed a mass exodus of families from around 3am this morning. When the families arrived at the checkpoints set up, the army began arresting the young men. The families were also met with heavy shooting, which lead to a two-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man being critically injured. Citizen journalists say due to a lack of doctors and medicine to treat them, they are likely to die.

Homs
Security forces with tanks, armored vehicles and personnel carriers entered Alhawla town near the city of Homs from the Taldo road. At dawn this morning the they spread heavily across the streets and positioned themselves in the town square, which activists have dubbed Freedom Square. Electricity and water were cut off as well as all communication channels in the region. The Shabiha and security forces raided people’s homes in Alhawla.
They have also arrested Ahmad Alqassim, the father of Wael Ahmad Alqassim, who was killed earlier today.

“Muhammad”, an Avaaz citizen journalist in Homs, sent this report:
“All the neighborhoods are cut off from each other other. The security forces, the Shabiha and the army have erected barriers to prevent these neighborhoods from gathering together into big demonstrations. However this has not stopped the will of the Syrian people, who are more determined than ever to fight. There at least are two demonstrations every day, one after dawn prayers and one after the iftar prayers. Normal life is absent in Homs. People have no money to pay their bills as they cannot work. It is so bad that people are running out of food to eat. The town of Houlia, to the west of Homs and composed of four neighborhoods is also completely cut off from the outside world by the military. Today the army stormed the town, raiding dozens of houses. At least two people are reported to have been killed. Electricity, water and all communications have also been cut in the town.  Syrian people want the international community to know that they are deeply disappointed, and that they feel they have been forgotten. People are being killed every day in every city in Syria, yet nothing is preventing this and the international community remains silent.”
Damascus - Jobar
According to Avaaz citizen journalists, the security forces and Shabiha carried out raids on dozens of homes in the suburb of Jobar.

Hama
The security and Shabiha militia carried out a wave of arrests in the town of Kaznar, close to the city of Hama. Avaaz has the names of 53 people arrested so far.

Avaaz citizen journalist “Sami” filed this latest dispatch from the restive city of Hama today:
“All my activist group have now been arrested for their activities – charged with contacting foreign media. The regime has refused to admit taking them. I am now on the regime’s most wanted list and am in hiding. There are still checkpoints all over Hama, and many people are still being arrested. They are updating their wanted list every 2 hours. Tens of thousands are on their list in Hama alone. There are a lot of informers. The regime has a lot of information on activists, which can only come from informers within activists’ close circles. Anyone who speaks with foreign media is tortured. We are afraid about the lives of our group, who have been arrested. The way the regime tortures is disgusting. First you must get naked, to humiliate you. Everyone is made to strip – whether in a group cell or a single cell. I know many people who have told me this. They beat them brutally, allow them 1 hour of sleep, before torturing them again. They torture you for 3 days before you are interrogated, as a matter of practice. Even if you confess something they want you to say, they still torture you again. They use electricity on your genitals to maximise the pain. My situation is very bad. I am wanted. I am trying to be safe and have stopped my activities. I cannot go out and film protests any more.
They are blocking all the streets so you can’t move around. Security forces are robbing and looting shops and houses. They empty houses of all valuable possessions and take them away in military trucks. The army broke into dozens of houses. Then they destroy the houses. We are discovering this destruction all over Hama.
The areas outside each mosque in the city is permanently surrounded and when worshipers come out after prayers the security forces shoot at them.More than 200 army and Shabiha militiamen are currently hiding in Bader Aldeen Hamed school in Al Qsur, near to where I am in hiding. They are going into shops in Al Qsur and Jeser Al Mazareb and taking what they want. If the shopkeeper demands payment they kill them. They mock them saying “Let the revolution pay you”. The shopkeepers are really afraid at the moment. They have to keep their shops open otherwise they cannot make a living, even though it is very dangerous. There are very few defections these days. They are controlling the army more tightly.
Today the internet has come back in Hama so we will be able to organise big protests this evening, and can send videos to the international media.”

Daraa
The security forces and Shabiha stormed the town of Mohajaja and carried out a campaign of arrests and raids, taking any men in the town they find. According to a youth activist who managed to flee the town, hundreds have been arrested.

Avaaz calls on EU countries to stop funding Syria’s bloody crackdown

Friday, August 12, 2011 For immediate release Avaaz calls on EU countries to stop funding Syria’s bloody crackdown EU-Syria oil trade propping up regime 150,000 people call for Germany, France and Italy to impose immediate oil sanctions Global campaign organisation Avaaz has called on European nations to impose immediate sanctions on the purchase of Syrian oil, in a bid to stem the flow of cash funding the regime’s bloody crackdown against peaceful protesters. More than 150,000 Avaaz members have signed the petition in just 24 hours. Almost all Syria’s exported oil is purchased by European countries, primarily Germany, France and Italy. However these governments have yet to use their key trade relationship with President al-Assad as leverage to protect the Syrian people. Germany, France and Italy have denounced the violence, and some EU leaders are already pushing for oil sanctions. Today Avaaz members are demanding that these countries ramp up the pressure and immediately push through oil sanctions and cut the engine of Assad’s murderous regime. Alice Jay, Campaign Director at Avaaz, said: “For months, Syria’s brutal President Assad has paid henchmen to wage war on his own people with lucrative European oil revenues. Governments across the world have condemned these atrocities, but key European leaders could easily cut off the cash flow that finances this bloodbath. “If these countries move to impose immediate oil sanctions, Assad’s slaughter funds will dry up. We have no time to lose. Every day dozens of Syrians are killed, tortured or disappeared simply for calling for basic democratic rights. The EU can stop funding the crackdown now.” The world has watched and read about the horrific violence in Syria – much of the coverage coming from Avaaz-supported citizen journalists who are risking their lives to report on Assad’s crackdown. We now have a chance to turn our horror into action. EU firms including Shell, Total, BP, and OMV have purchased Syrian crude since the uprising. Experts say EU oil sanctions will seriously disrupt cash flow to Assad’s cruel army without significant negative consequences. Avaaz launched a petition to EU heads of state to immediately adopt targeted sanctions that restrict EU-based companies and individuals from purchasing, importing, refining or shipping Syrian oil or the financing of any of these activities, through targeted sanctions of the Syrian state oil company Sytrol: www.avaaz.org/en/no_blood_for_oil/?vl ENDS For more information please contact Will Davies on 0044 7855 419901 or will@avaaz.org. Notes to editors While oil exports to Europe are very important to Syria, the inverse isn’t true—a sanction on Syrian exports would not seriously impact any major European oil firm or the sources of oil for any EU countries. Crude oil exports are sold exclusively by the Syrian state-owned oil company Sytrol. Unlike other Syrian state oil companies, Sytrol reports not to the Ministry of Oil but directly to the Prime Minister’s office. From 2003 to 2008, oil revenue was above 20 per cent of state revenue, according to the Syrian Central Bank. This year, oil revenue will be more than 25 per cent of government revenues, and likely much more given that tourism has collapsed. Before the uprising began in mid-March, tourism amounted to 12 per cent of GDP in Syria. 2009 oil revenue for Syria: US $2.415 billion. 2010 revenue: US $3.2 billion In 2009, Total purchased 12 million barrels (€472 million) from Syrian state-controlled entities. Syrian total oil exports are around one per cent of EU consumption. Sytrol receives payment in Euros through the state-owned Commercial Bank of Syria’s correspondent accounts at European banks.
