Until recently, state and local laws required that each registered voter be mailed a copy of the Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample Ballot. Recently passed state and municipal laws allow voters to “go green” by opting out of receiving a Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample Ballot by mail, and accessing it online instead.

How do I change the way I receive my Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample Ballot?

Use the Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample Ballot – Opt Out/Opt In Form to request that mail delivery of your Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample Ballot be stopped, OR to resume mail delivery if you previously had it stopped.

Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample Ballot – Opt Out/Opt In Online Form

Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample Ballot – Opt Out/Opt In Form (PDF)

To opt out of receiving the Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample ballot by mail for the November 6, 2012 election and all future elections, a completed form must be received by the Department no later than September 17, 2012. If the request is received after this date, the change will take effect for the next election.
If I decide to opt out of receiving my Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample Ballot by mail, where can I find it online?

Approximately 40 days prior to any election, your Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample Ballot will be available online on the San Francisco Department of Elections website, www.sfelections.com/toolkit. At that time, the Department will send a reminder to the email address you have provided on the Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample Ballot – Opt Out/Opt In Form.

If I opt out of receiving my Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample Ballot by mail, can I request to start receiving it again in the mail?

Yes. You can request to opt back into receiving your Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample Ballot in the mail by completing the Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample Ballot – Opt Out/Opt In Form at least 50 days prior to an election.

Is the Voter Information Pamphlet available in accessible formats?

Yes. The Voter Information Pamphlet posted on our website, www.sfelections.org/toolkit, is compatible with screen readers. The Department of Elections also offers the Voter Information Pamphlet in audiocassette, audio CD and large-print formats. To request a copy of this pamphlet in an accessible format, please contact the Department of Elections at (415) 554-4375 or by email.

Will my email address remain confidential?

The Department of Elections will keep your email address confidential. However, California Elections Code section 2194(a)(3) requires the Department to provide your email address “to any candidate for federal, state, or local office, to any committee for or against any initiative or referendum measure for which legal publication is made, and to any person for election, scholarly, journalistic, or political purposes, or for governmental purposes, as determined by the Secretary of State.”

Use the following link for a full explanation of when the Department is required to release confidential information.
