Inspired by Bartolome de Las Casas, the friar who championed the human and civic rights of indigenous peoples in the New World, the Las Casas Institute opens in October 2008 to promote research on the relationship of faith to public life and institutions with a focus on poverty, migration, dignity, and human rights.
