the Guitarist

So how am I a guitarist?

I got into music very young and initially played brass in several concert and jazz bands. But the guitar really opened me up musically, and I’ve been playing since 1991.

While proficient on both acoustic and electric guitars I favor the electric for its tonal versatility and solo voicing ability. I enjoy playing most styles (blues, jazz, folk, celtic) but especially any form of rock. My personal playing style has been described as atmospheric and melodic. I’ve been involved in varied musical ventures over the years, and am always open to new opportunities.

I frequently get asked to do private lessons, but my “free” time is in short supply… so I’m usually unavailable for lessons except under the most agreeable compensational circumstances.

Some Studio Work

Here are examples of studio work I’ve performed on.

All guitar solos written and performed by me. Hear and Blunder words, music, performed and © Copyright 2006 by McClaine Tribe. Be The Center words & music by Michael Frye, arranged by Scott Womer and performed by the Terra Nova Worship Band. The Solid Rock words by Edward Mote, music by William B. Bradbury, arranged by Scott Womer and performed by the Terra Nova Worship Band. Hungry For You words & music © Copyright 2007 Scott & Patty Womer, performed by the Terra Nova Worship Band.

My Guitarsenal

What is a guitarsenal, you ask?

guitarsenal (gi-’tรคr-s&n-&l) n. – the complete selection of axes at an artist’s disposal for when it comes time to throw down an audio assault or other sonic mayhem; typically does not possess an upper limit in size.

spacer My main axe right now is a Carvin DC400 with neck-through maple, mahogany sides, and a Wilkinson Tremolo. The bridge is modified with RMC piezo saddles (with 23K gold sensors) that provides both 1/4″ acoustic output and 13-pin synth output. The piezo The neck pickup is a Dimarzio PAF Pro and the bridge pickup is a Dimarzio Tone Zone. The fretboard is ebony with abalone inlays and stainless steel frets and the action is perfect. The sunset burst finish on the quilted maple top is the most gorgeous I have ever seen. I’ve never played a better guitar (to include many an over-priced showroom model).

spacer This next guitar has been a trusted friend for a long time. This is an Ibanez USA Custom RG series model with rosewood fretboard, Floyd Rose bridge (with locking nut), and a beautifully deep red finish. The pickups are, from neck to bridge, Dimarzio FRED, Joe Barden S Deluxe, and Dimarzio Tone Zone. For me, Dimarzio makes the best electric pickups… no question.

spacer And finally, in the category of best performance without electricity, is my Taylor. Taylor guitars are just wonderful instruments with rich acoustic sound. My Taylor 410ce (circa 2002) is a wonderful sidekick that is just fun to pick up and strum. These are quality instruments and have a distinctive, gently aggressive sound.

Guitar Wishlist

If given the chance to double my guitarsenal I would add (in any order):

  • Music Man John Petrucci Signature Series colored Mystic Dream
  • Jackson KV2 King V colored Blue Ghost Flame
  • McPherson MG4.0 with Flamed Redwood Top on Brazilian Rosewood

  • Dennis Cameron :: A chops-heavy longtime favorite – he created Angelica, then toured with Michael Sweet, and now leads Cynical Limit.
  • Jesse Cook :: Brilliant neo-flamenco guitarist with a flavor for world-sounds and impeccable technique.
  • Joe Satriani :: The master of melody – widely regarded as “the best”.
