Open Source Contributions

2007 at 12:12 by Kelly Dorset

This page lists open source applications written by PlusNet staff and released to the Community.

Currently we have two applications available for download which are both WordPress plugins:-

  • Flickr Thumbnail Photostream WordPress Plugin - Randomly selects from a maximum of 500 photos on your Flickr account and displays them on your blog, without using an RSS feed.
  • Twitter WordPress Plugin – Have multiple Twitter accounts displayed on your blog front page and a WordPress page to support it.

These open source applications have been available to outside world for several months now and have been spotted in use as far afield as South America.

PlusNet has a strong tradition of using Open Source software to power the business. This website, for instance, runs WordPress, SMF, Apache, PHP, MySQL & other software – all open source. Here we hope to show our gratitude and repay the Community in some small way.

I'm still watching this space (mainly because it is so prominently advertised on the community site.) Twelve months have passed and you have to start wondering quite how much tidying these items are being given before they are released. I wonder if events will render them useless before they have seen the light of day, like the mobile phone trolleys of 1982, or the 1500 Free-Mandella t-shirts I have in the attic.

Yes please be patient, we do plan to release some more open source applications.

We have been very busy with various essential projects recently that require our immediate attention, but rest assured we haven't forgotten about the open source items.

I am obviously much less far along this road as I am still trying to work out how to install wordpress or anything else that will make a blog or forum on my force9 site interactive. I don't even understand half the terms used here. Please could anyone help a bear of small brain. I really do want this.

Hi Daffni,

Why not hop to the forums and see if the other users can give you a hand?

This should be the right forum: community.plus.net/forum/index.php/board,9.0.html

I cannot make Twitter Feed work in any sidebar but the original ones. That is, I have created a new sidebar and registered it. It appears as desired and has all the links, etc, that I want. However, when I move Twitter Feed to that sidebar using the Widgets page, Twitter does not appear. All help appreciated; TIA.

On the all tweets page I just see the latest tweet of my Twitter account.

How to I present all the tweets in stead of only the latest one?

Hey Ferry. That's how the app works. Its for showing the last tweet from multiple users, not multiple tweets from one user.

There are loads of twitter plugins that will do what you want though. Just search the WordPress codex.

I'm still trying to get the twitter plugin to work efficiently spacer In the "Twitter Control" section of the CP, the style of the actual plugin seems to be abit jumbled. I have tried putting the [twitter] plugin onto a standard page and it works to a certain degree. Can anyone tell me how to add this to a widget? and/or if I can the "ALL TWEETS" URL can be directed the homepage, as the link doesn't appear in the drop down list?

Thanks

Hi Kelly,

I just downloaded the plugin and installed it on a client site. I used the Twitter Blog widget and placed it on the sidebar. When I refreshed the page, the images weren't showing. I ended up going into the twitterPlugin.php file and modifying the directory path.

The plugin was pointing to images in ...wp-content/plugins/twitter/ instead of ...wp-content/plugins/twitter-feed/. Once I did that it started showing the images correctly.

Thought you should know so you could correct it in the next version.

Thanks.

Try as I might, I can't get the broadband ONLY start button to start. I can't find any info except phones, which I'm unable to use. This before I've even become a customer. Very irritated and unlikely to join now.
