About ice-Boy.com is the home to comics I make from a world called Overside. Beginning in 2006, I've been working to build a world of comics with a rich history and a unique aesthetic. There are currently over one thousand pages of material on this site, which you can read for free.All of the stories here are self contained, though they build upon each other. Rice Boy was made first, and Order of Tales was completed in 2010. Vattu was started in July 2010. Short stories from Overside are added as donation goals are met. You can follow along with updates via Twitter, Facebook, or RSS. My name is Evan Dahm; I make these comics. Frequently Asked QuestionsWhere do you get your ideas?Wherever I can find them. It ends up not mattering that much where you get them, as long as you pursue them in a way that is appropriate and honest to your own intentions. The value of an idea pales in comparison to the massive amount of work it takes to realize it. I answered this more thoroughly a while ago here. What are your influences? Ditto; it's difficult to answer that. I try to read a lot; I try to look at media doing similar things to what I'm trying to do and seeing how to do it better. I try to maintain interests outside of my work. Do you make your living on comics? Yes. I live in the least expensive apartment in New York City. Selling my books online and at conventions is how this is possible. How do you print your books? The Rice Boy book is the first one I've had mass-produced (a run of 1000 in 2010 and 2000 in 2011), meaning the price per unit is low enough to make a sustainable income on. They're printed in China, with a reputable company who has worked with major publishers. The other books I've made have been printed on demand, which works ok for small, inexpensive books, but isn't great for overall quality and cost. How did you get started? I have been drawing and writing my whole life. Rice Boy was the first time I worked on a big story and took it seriously and finished it. I started it in college for fun, and put it online so people could see. I didn't do much planning, and just kind of went with it, and learned a lot about what I was doing on the way. Will you ever make a comic about this or that specific thing on Overside? Probably not. I'm trying to take less of a 'fill-in-the-gaps' approach to making Overside stories, and more writing things that interest me. Overside is basically a big storytelling tool, not an actual physical setting to be developed beyond the needs of its stories. |
