Wolf Trap Opera Company 2013 Season Auditions

The Wolf Trap Opera Company is a paid, performance-oriented summer residency for singers of exceptional achievement and potential. All productions are professionally conducted, directed, coached, and designed; and are performed in the original language with full orchestra.

The 2013 summer season will include two or three opera productions with full orchestra, several recital or concert opportunities, and a scenes program.

Rehearsals begin in mid/late May, and performances may last into the end of August. Not all artists are required to be present for the entire season. Please note any conflicts with the basic time frame on your application form.

Who Should Apply?

Filene Young Artist Profile

Filene Young Artists sing principal, featured and supporting roles in all WTOC productions. Approximately 15 Filene Young Artists are engaged for each summer season. They are paid a stipend, and housing is provided at no cost.

Successful candidates are at an interim point between academic training and full-time professional careers. Most FYA’s are currently enrolled in a graduate or professional degree program or are not more than 2-3 years past completion of academic training and/or full-time young artist program work.

If you are just beginning graduate study, or haven’t done any of the paid young artist residency programs, it’s probably too early to be competitive. Conversely, if it has been more than 2 years since you were last involved in an academic or full time young artist program, you have already moved beyond the reach of our program.

Studio Artist Profile

Studio Artists sing ensemble and solo bit roles in mainstage productions, perform their own scenes program and participate in a skill-enhancing and career-building curriculum designed especially for them. They are paid a stipend, and housing is provided at no cost.

Successful Studio Artist candidates will be at least undergraduate sophomores (in the year in which they audition) and not more advanced than first-year graduate students. A singer who has already done a year or more of graduate work at the time of audition is beyond the reach of the studio.

Coaching Fellowship Profile

Each Fellow’s summer is structured according to individual strengths and needs, but typically includes serving as rehearsal pianist for one or more productions; providing artist coaching as needed; running supertitle translations during performances; and coaching and playing the Studio Artist scenes program.

Candidates for the coaching fellowship are typically currently involved in graduate degree programs or young artist training programs.

Candidates who are already working professionally are typically beyond the scope of this program.

Internship Profile

The WTOC offers internships in stage management, technical theatre, costumes, administration, directing and multi-media.

Successful candidates are college students or recent graduates who are interested in learning more about working in an opera company. They typically have acquired relevant skills in academic and amateur environments but do not yet have significant professional experience.

Interns are not chosen during the fall audition tour. Internship applications will be available each year in late winter through the Wolf Trap Foundation Education department.
