As an evolution from Social Media Camp, the Social Media Action Camp, already in its second year, makes a global statement for Social Media Week 2013. According to Synthesio Global Social Media Monitoring, the event out performed Social Media Week host cities Copenhagen and Singapore in total Tweets and was just behind Tokyo and Miami 164 and 390 tweets respectively. In fact inside the host city of New York, HashTracking reports showed that 25% of the Impressions (Timeline Deliveries) from #SMWNYC were generated from #SMWSMAC tweets during the event that day. With 1 in every 10 #smwnyc tweets also carrying the #smwsmac hashtag during the event, clearly the Social Media Action Camp had a significant impact on Social Media Week in New York as Tuesday served as the kickoff day due to the Monday Holiday.

Social Media Action Camp was 1 of 63 Events on Feb 19th 2013, it took place as a stand alone venue at Steelcase Showrooms, while the SMW Ideas Connected, Global HQ hosted sessions at the Metropolitan Pavilion, Business & Entrepreneurship’s Hub was taking place at Bloomberg, Advertising & Marketing was taking place at Hearst, Lifestyle & Culture took place at JWT and Society & Social Impact took place at 92|Y.

When the event was announced on January 28th via SocialMediaWeek.org, the first tickets sold in just a few hours leading to the Sell Out on Feb 14th.

We got emails and calls all day Friday the 15th, from people genuinely upset about not being able to get a ticket. Steelcase worked closely with us to expand our initial offering from 75 attendees to 100 but even that vanished in less than 24hrs. I was really shocked when people showed up that day with fake print outs from Eventbrite. I think it’s a testament to our organizations and our speakers, the message of an event promising Facts, Data and Tactics sends a clear message about expectations and value. – @BasilPuglisi Content Manager for Digital Ethos.

The event also garnished a lot of extra activity because of the pace. Each speaker went 30 minutes from start to finish and with only 30 minutes for lunch it was anything but a relaxed environment. The focus on learning outcomes gave attendees something to jump at and tweet. After all, it’s that take-away that the attendees really want!

The mix of superstar personalities including Ekaterina Walter from Intel, Scott Monty from Ford and Ted Rubin of Collective Bias gave some flare to an already packed lineup with professionals like Ric Dragon of Social Marketology, Mark Coatney of Tumblr, Nelly Yusopova of Web Grrls International, Anthony Napolitano of StumbleUpon and even CEO’s Duleepa Wijayawardhana of Empire Avenue and Nathan Latka of Heyo just to name a few.  It really provided a full experience ranging from introduction through midmarket to insights for corporate brands.

The really impressive thing is that we didn’t get to take full advantage of all our speakers, the pace was so fast moving that I think some of our speakers didn’t even get a tweet off while they where there. If we had just reminded Scott Monty or Ekaterina Walter to tweet about the Live Stream just think how much further those numbers would have grown – Craig E Yaris, Board of Directors for Digital Ethos

Kred provided a Leader Board where the attendees could see the TOP 50 Influencers and Outreachers around the hash tag for the event, which was a great visual tool to stress that everyone has some influence and there is more than one form of measurable value in social interactions.

In the end, the event, co-organized by Digital Ethos and Social Media Club, clearly struck a chord. Garnishing an all star lineup, selling out the event, and obtaining sponsorship’s from Constant Contact, Empire Avenue, GG Group Inc, Synthesio and Steelcase clearly indicates that there is a need for what Social Media Action Camp brings to its attendees. With a solid history and impressive verifiable data, you can expect the Social Media Action Camp will be back for as long as Social Media Week will keep having them.

Why I want to attend the #SMWsmac on Feb 19th for #SMWnyc

I teach career development at a “nontraditional” college where my average student is in his/her late 30s/early 40s and I would like to know more about social media.

I want to teach the importance of using social media as a platform to build one’s professional brand online.  It’s my experience that most students are career changers or entrepreneurs.  It is important, now more than ever, to understand how social media can connect to one’s next employer or next client. There are students who know about Facebook as a personal and/or fun outlet.  I would like to help them use Facebook as a portal to connect to professionals and businesses. I would like to help them as professionals expand and explore inside and outside of their network. I have facilitated discussions on how to use Twitter to follow potential employers and mentors but would like more knowledge of doing so. I feel LinkedIn is a great tool to connect people through the online resume and “linking” features.

However, this is the extent of my social media knowledge.  I have registered for Instagram and Google+ but do not quite understand how it can be used for brand building/identity as yet. I know the other social media platforms can help achieve the goal of building a professional brand identity online; however, my first-hand experience is limited and I would like to know more.

As a learning professional it is my duty to share knowledge with others in order for them to achieve their goals, whether to gain more information or to change behavior.  I would like to know more about how to use the different social media platforms and specifically which ones will help meet specific needs and wants.

I am also an “entrepreneur” in the nonprofit world.  I have co-founded Caribbean Association for Resource Information & Building (CARIB) and Camara Dance Unlimited (CDU). CARIB’s mission is to seek and to support and strengthen identities and build collaborations by providing opportunities to share and develop networks to represent the Caribbean Diaspora and changing culture influences. CDU seeks to illuminate cultural awareness and history, foster inter-generational communication and be of service to communities. Both use arts as the venue to do our work.  Primarily, we use Facebook and Constant Contact as sources to build awareness and update our constituents on what we do; however, we need to be seeking to use other social media platforms to engage more. Both organizations produce a limited amount of programs, so it is important to stay connected. As I stated earlier, I need to understand which platforms to use for what reasons.  This will help each organization with community development and outreach.

I believe attending the Social Media Action Camp – Growing Your Brand Online: Facts, Data and Tactics training will give me the needed background knowledge as an entrepreneur and an instructor.  I want to learn “the how and the why” and put in practical use.  I will be able to experience it through building CARIB’s and CDU’s brand online. However, most importantly, I will share my learning and first-hand experience with my students. They will share in what I learn and know the possibilities of how each platform can be useful to build their professional brand, in turn connecting them to the employer of their dreams or generate new revenue and new clients.
