Fri, March 8, 2013 | Holiday House in Belgium // Wim Goes Architectuur |

Architecture |
|
There is a horizontal transition from a formal ornamental facade to a fluidity of open spaces overlooking a courtyard. The orientation and front facade of the house is reversed. Light penetrates the interior through a four story glass facade, illuminating the curving staircase that connects the spaces together. The floors become more private in vertical succession. |

The goal of the architectural concept was to upgrade the existing traditional structure with puristic architecture. Monika Gogl therefore worked very consciously with contrasting materials such as local wood, natural stone, granite, glass and exposed concrete. The timeless style puts nature at its centre. |

Architecture |

Refuge is a link between landscape and architecture, but at the same time does not try to be one more than the other or anything new. The clients confessed to me that after many years of living there, they got to know the landscape in a different way after my project. It is important to note that the landscape didn’t change, but rather their perceptions. The architecture is not meant to portray a certain state of mind, but in principle a space that accommodates a state of mind and time. |

Architecture |
|
As part of a project to bring public function to Ecology Island in Central Park, a neglected corner of Dartford, architects of Studio Weave have designed a colourful building to act as jolly custodian for the re-imagined park. The proposal is comprised of organizing a program of events and workshops based around dyeing and wildlife; a small building that provides flexible accommodation for these activities; and planting a meadow of flowers and vegetables that yield natural dyes and beckon wildlife. |

Renovation always means establishing a relationship of sorts with the past, with the pasts that are accumulated in the space of the intervention. And also with the future, with that imaginary idea of the location we would like to tend towards. But above all it means a great capacity to work with the present. To erase or to design: to eliminate, clean, repair, reconstruct, replace, incorporate, add. Successive discoveries continually require different and complementary responses. The relationships between old and new spaces are gradually brought about, often in real time, as are those between the workers who one day put up the walls and those who now remake them. |

Studio Weave has transformed an awkward exterior space landlocked by buildings into the Lullaby Factory – a secret world that cannot be seen except from inside the hospital and cannot be heard by the naked ear, only by tuning in to its radio frequency or from a few special listening pipes. |

Twisted House was completed by architects of JVA studio. The private residence is located on the territory of the ski resort in Norway. The house was built in 2011 and occupies an area of 360 square meters. It is located in the mountains at an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level. The building is repeating the surface area and is a holiday home. An interesting feature of the residence is the fact that it is composed of the seven overlapping levels, therefore, every point of interior offers a different view. |

CWA were approached by the project client to deliver a carbon neutral (in operation) solution for an environmentally sensitive site off-grid on the edge of the FNQ beachfront rainforest. The aim was not to simply produce an engineered outcome but produce a building which made the most of the sites natural amenity and re-introduced the surrounding native wetland environment. The building is literally reflected by way of its siting over an engineered water ecosystem which was the result of lengthy liaison & collaboration with DERM, QPWS & all levels of government. |
Mon, February 25, 2013 | Lucerne House // Daniel Marshall |

Architecture |

Sited on the edge of the ancient crater that embraces Orakei Basin with extravagant views to inner Waitamata harbour and Auckland city, Lucerne House was designed by Marshall Architect. The brief was very specific, with garaging a number of classic cars a primary concern. Daniel’s design response was to wrap the garaging around a central ‘pergatoria’ – a term coined by the italian architect Terragni for an entry courtyard. The garage doors detailed to disappear into the adjoining cedar exterior. This area also incorporates the entry, conceived as a three level atrium that entices the visitor up to the living level and to the eventual revelation of the views of the Auckland landscape beyond. The curved edge of the infinity pool echoes the form of Orakei basin and draws the sea view closer to the house. |

Daylight reveals the plasticity of tumor and white colors as watercolors have spread in selected areas, while at night the lights in headlights and other details throughout the building becomes a supernatural setting, hovering over the pool. The orientation is East and spaces organized in turn by the sun to “live” the best of their era: the outdoor kitchen has shade in the afternoon to be able to enjoy a meal in peace. The building appears to volume configured by touch, without straights and tight corners – as if it was slowly over time, with the wind and rain. |

Designed in collaboration with Landscape Designer Marcus Barnett, the temporary garden and pavilion explore the significance of plants to science and society. Plant species were chosen to reflect their benefits to society including medicinal, commercial and industrial uses found in everyday life. The design brief for the garden was extended to the pavilion by looking closely at the cellular structure of plants and their processes of growth and formation. The final structure was designed using computer algorithms that mimic natural growth and was intended to allow visitors to experience the patterns of biological structure at an unfamiliar scale. |

The house land is oriented to West. On the East limit, where the municipal road gives access, features a rugged topography, due to the existence of a slope. Beyond the slope, the land develops with slight and constant pendant, longitudinally; like a promontory over the city. The house is delimited on the East by a concrete wall that erupts from the ground and sustains the higher lands – on the entry elevation. |

The architects say that this house was inspired by by Mies van der Rohe and Henri Matisse. Architecture coupled with color can bring joy while providing the basic necessities. In this project architects decided to be as bold with color choices as the work would allow and to push boundaries that few dare, but their choices were always based in serious color theory. |

Old shipping containers used as the structural framework for the WFH- Huse. This is not just recycling; This is upcycling! The WFH concept is a modular concept, based on a design principle, using 40 feet high cube standard modules as structural system. The structure can be adapted to local challenges such as climatic or earthquake issues. Online customization-tools give clients the possibility to decide their own version of the house concerning layout, size, facade, interior etc. The configuration happens within a predefined framework that will ensure high architectural value and quality of materials. Building-components are prefabricated and on site construction can be limited. |

Edgeland Residence is located on a rehabilitated brownfield site and is a modern re-interpretation of one of the oldest housing typologies in North America, the Native American Pit House. The Pit House, typically sunken, takes advantage of the earth’s mass to maintain thermal comfort throughout the year. Like this timeless dwelling, Edgeland Residence’s relationship to the landscape both in terms of approach as well as building performance involves an insulative green roof and a 7-foot excavation- gaining benefits from the earth’s mass to help it stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Such an architectural setting presents an opportunity for maximum energy efficiency when combined with high performance systems such as the integrated hydronic HVAC system. The mechanical system combines: hydronic heating and a green roof for maximum energy efficiency. |

A part of the landscape was incorporated in the open-space sculpture gallery, hosting the artist’s creations. |

At the end of 2012, printing ofice Drukta and mailing company Formail moved into their new building. Not a new build, but a former textile company’s warehouse, spanning 4.000 sqm. For their office space, both companies were looking for a solution which needed to meet their needs and budget. At the same time, they really wanted the original and creative concept to become a proper eye-catcher, linking the office area with the machines on the work floor – a task right up the street of interior designers Five AM in Kortrijk (Belgium). |

This Project is a complete refurbishment of a colonial style house in one of the most charming neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro. Set on an extraordinary site, full of exotic trees and plants (original landscape plan by the famous landscape architect Burle Marx) it’s a 1500 sq meters house divided in 2 blocks. The main and bigger block is the family’s house. The smaller one accommodates the staff’s rooms, laundry, garage, Home Theater and SPA (the last one directly connected with the outside leisure activities, swimming and the patio). |
