One of my first memories of my dad was singing this Woody Guthrie song the “Oklahoma Hills where I was born”. It was one of my dad’s favorites. My grandparents came from Oklahoma in 1927 to work on farms in the Imperial Valley California about 10 miles from Mexico. My dad lived on the farm until he was 15 years old, until his dad passed away on a tractor, while out working in the fields. So, at the age of 15 my father moved to the city, with his only possession’s being one bag, and a wealth of knowledge of the great american cowboy song.

Dedicated to Don Armstrong 1931-2012.

This song was co-written by three pioneers of Sam Phillips’ Sun Records studio. It was recorded by rockabilly hero Charlie Feathers. Charlie, a creative dynamo at Sun, co wrote the tune with Stan Kesler- a mandolin/guitar player in the studio’s house country band, and drummer Johnny Bernero. All three were a big part of the hey day of rockabilly and country in the 1950′s. Charlie and Stan co-wrote Elvis’s 1955 hit “I Forgot To Remember To Forget”. Charlie wrote about 200 other songs, mostly rockabilly.

Black Derby Jacket

This one was originally sung by Matt Freeman on Rancid V (Rancid 2000). Rancid played it fast with a west coast forbidden punk beat. Matt and I have been friends since we were 5 years old. We both wore black derby jackets when we were kids. Growing up in the bay area the weather gets mighty chilly at times.

The Stones’ 1972 Exile On Main Street LP served up a blend of R&B, rock, soul, country and blues. That kind of gritty raw stuff suits us. Here goes our take on the lead cut off that album.
