    Hello,

Are there any pans to release the functionality of Annotum as a plugin? This would give users far greater flexibility in using existing themes. What are your thoughts ?

    Thanks

We considered the plugin approach, but for the first version we wanted to provide a very stable and consistent experience. We believe that creating turnkey, peer-reviewed scholarly journals with a structured editor is best done via a single theme. As I recently wrote:

Annotum is provided as a single WordPress theme, including its own plugins, templates, and custom code. Although some [similar] features are already available as stand-alone plugins, a key design philosophy of Annotum was to keep the installation as simple as possible. WordPress plugins and themes can at times conflict; the Annotum team sought to reduce the chance of such conflicts by having a single theme contain all of the features to be delivered.

Some of the new functionality (e.g., workflow, pdf export) is implemented as plugins within the theme; others (for example the article editor) are much more deeply integrated. But certainly you can feel free to download the source code and have a go at creating a separate plugin for any of the features you would like to use.

One last note: because we based Annotum on the Carrington theme engine, it’s a reasonably straightforward matter to create child themes that use the base Annotum features with a completely different look and feel. Annotum 1.0 comes with one base and one child theme.

    Hi.

I am very much a wordpress novice but I do have some experience with building child themes with wordpress and buddypress. However I cant seem to find an up to date resource on how to do this for Carrington.

A particular issue I am struggling with is incorporating the article custom post type and getting it to successfully display using a child theme

Would it be possible for you or crowd favorite to post up a tutorial for building child themes within the Carrington framework for Annotum. I can see this is a different task to building child themes in the normal fashion.

If crowd favourite do this then I think it would also encourage wider use of their framework.

P.s this is great work your doing. I very much hope to use this tool within a multisite network.

You may have already seen what the WordPress Codex has to say about child themes, and I can refer you to this post on the Carrington Theme blog which has some additional details — check the comments section below the main post. Finally, instead of starting a new child theme from scratch, with Annotum you might try copying the entire Currents child theme to a new directory and modifying it.

Thanks! We’ve done some testing with multisite and it seems to work fine, but if you do see any issues, please feel free to send any bug or issue reports to the discussion list.

Hi, first of all, my compliments for the project.

I just want to know if there’s an Italian stable translation for this plugin, it looks interesting (we currently manage over 7 wordpress news sites).

Waiting for answer, thank you ! Regards from Italy

You can create an Annotum site for free at wordpress.com (simply select the Annotum Base or Annotum Sans theme). Then you can author whatever you wish.

Is it just me, or are there major complications using the editor? I have tried to test the system (I am a professional publisher in search of a system for an experimental project), and I cannot get the XML article editing interface to behave in any reasonable manner. In other XML editors, one can toggle to the code (for example) to insert new elements precisely, etc., but here, I cannot get rid of elements that are already in place (again, for example). If this worked along the lines described, this would be a perfect solution for me. WordPress + XML is an excellent idea, but only if the use is simple and intuitive, right?

Thanks for your thoughts on this,

    Fred

It is not just you. Remember that Annotum is a 1.0 version, so some features particularly the XML support can be a bit rough. There have been some improvements in later versions of the code (see https://github.com/Annotum/Annotum/downloads for the latest tested version). Also, we’re currently considering a significant rewrite of the XML editor which should make the experience much better.

In the meantime, you can edit the XML directly by using Google Chrome as your browser and using the “inspect element” feature to view and manipulate the XML code in the editor.

I was having an account on Knol where I posted some very nice articles for others as well as my own reference. Is it possible to get an access to those articles with previous Knol urls ?? Please guide.

You still have time to set up redirects by following the automated transfer process. The other option is to download your knols to a file and manually post the content elsewhere (including an Annotum site if you so choose).

However, these options are only available until October 1, 2012 – after that date you can no longer transport or export Knols (although the redirects should continue to function until search engines are able to find the new location(s) of your content).

Please visit annotum.uservoice.com if you have any questions.

      Dear cssbubble,
I am an Ayurvedic Physician and an academician. I am using wordpress quite some time now. I am searching a site or blog which could provide an opportunity to build journal (open source). I came across Annotum Base Theme which can be useful for my purpose. As you are developing website for an ayurveda journal i thought you could help me.

There’s no current translation for Chinese. However you can create one! See the brief instructions in the readme.md file here: https://github.com/Annotum/Annotum
