Opel Kadett D/Vauxhall Astra Mk I. 1979–84 (prod. 36,300 approx. GTE only). 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-door saloon, 3- and 5-door estate. F/F, 993, 1196 cm³ (4 cyl. OHV), 1196, 1297, 1598, 1796 cm³ petrol, 1598 cm³ diesel (4 cyl. OHC). Opel goes transverse-engined, front-wheel drive for its T-car successor to fight the Volkswagen Golf I, though unlike its predecessor, it remained in Europe. One-litre models very rare, with only 10 of the 29 kW model, while the rest were 37 kW and mostly exported to Italy. SR and GTE sporting models, the latter from 1983, with a 1·8 OHC unit.
