Taking Exams

LPI exams are designed to be taken in almost every country in the world, in a manner that fits your schedule. Just follow the five steps listed in this article.

Exam Costs

Depending on where you take LPI exams, the cost will usually be the equivalent of $173 US dollars. However, please check with your local affiliate for regional prices. Please note that the LPIC-3 exam is priced differently then all other exams; it is $260 for a single certification exam.

Receiving Your Certification

Once you have passed all the required exams to achieve a certification, you will be automatically notified by email, at the email address you provided when you obtained your LPI identification number. If you have not received such an email within four weeks of passing all required exams, please send a message to us. In your message, please state your LPI identification number and the date(s) and locations at which exams were taken.

Within four to eight weeks of receiving this email, you will receive, by post, your paper certificate and plastic LPI wallet card. Congratulations!

Step 1: Register

Regardless of how or where you take your LPI exams, you must register online to receive an LPI identification number first. Failure to complete this step may effect your eligibility for your desired time slot. Also you must provide your LPI ID to the test centers when registering for an exam. Registration is free of charge and is completed here at the LPI web site.

Step 2: Choose Your Program

LPIC (Linux Professional Institute Certification) is offered at multiple levels. Indicate which exams and level of LPIC you are pursuing.

  • LPIC-1
  • LPIC-2
  • LPIC-3

Step 3: Understand LPI Policies

It is important that anyone planning to take LPI exams is aware of our policies on issues such as exam re-takes and expiry. Please read and understand our policies before taking LPI exams.

Step 4: Schedule to Take an Exam

LPI exams are delivered through a number of different methods; choose one that's most convenient:

You must provide your LPI ID to the test centers when registering for an exam. If you do not provide your LPI ID, your exam may not get loaded.

You can register for LPI exams through one of the thousands of Pearson VUE or Prometric testing centers worldwide. Once you have located a convenient Pearson VUE center, you may schedule to take an LPI exam either online or by phone.

(PLEASE NOTE: Effective July 1, 2012, LPI exams will be delivered exclusively with Pearson VUE via its worldwide network of more than 5,000 testing centers. LPI certification exams will no longer be available at Prometric testing centers at that time. For more information see: www.lpi.org/single-vendor-testing)

Step 5: Take the Exam

If you're taking a computer-delivered exam, you will receive your exam results immediately upon completion. Within one or two days your results will appear on this site in the candidate area. Please make sure the test vendor has the correct LPI ID on file or you will not see your results on this site. If taking a paper exam you should receive results in about two weeks.
