Eighth Day Genesis: A Worldbuilding Codex

There's a moment when you can close your eyes and see a world of your own making.

It might start from a grain of sand, the way light filters through the trees, the feel of satin robes, the smell of cooking soup, or simply a wish for somewhere, somewhen else. It happens for different reasons for different people. Something, anything can pull your mind from the boundaries of our mundane world and set it to creating somewhere else.

Featuring Maurice Broaddus, Tim Waggoner, Matthew Wayne Selznick, Donald J. Bingle, Janine Spendlove, Bryan Young, and fifteen more authors, these essays range from crafting believable ecosystems, creatures, and legal systems to the ways you can most effectively share your world with your audience.

Eighth Day Genesis is meant to help writers with their worlds. The depth of your world is important…even essential. Worlds should be able to be touched, smelled, seen, and heard. Each of these things is vital to creating reality. The smallest details can illuminate volumes. It is surprising what details with bring forth entire feelings, associations, and images. Stereotypes can be broken, archetypes deviated from, and wonder spilled forth like gossip from an old friend.

This book will help you fill in those details and create the world you've always imagined.

So You Want to Make an eBook?

You’ll often hear people talk about using an automated program to convert to eBooks, and say it’s good enough. Heck, I thought that too. What I - and so many others - have found, is that no automated converter is perfect. We’ve found that knowing how to make an eBook by hand gives us control when the programs don’t co-operate.

Whether you use another converter or an automated system (like Smashwords), I think it’s vital that authors have a reference in order to maintain control over their own work.

It’s like having the manual for doing an oil change on your car. Even if you always go to SpeedyWombatLube, having that choice - and the knowledge on how to fix your car if they screw up or go out of business - is real power.

I wrote this book to be accessible to a computer-literate (but not guru, wizard, or sysadmin) level. I avoid lots of obscure technical details, but walk you through the steps to do a basic conversion using free tools - and show you where references are to find out more yourself.

Redefining Our Relationships

Loving openly and freely in this day and age, whether you are straight or queer, is a political act. Put together your own vision of an ideal relationship, re-sculpt your own belief system, redefine the potential of a friendship, imagine a thousand ways to make love to yourself and to anyone you care about. Radicalize your relationship by imagining your wildest ideal partnership together. Avoid stagnancy by challenging your old familiar routine and re-inventing new levels of commitment. Face your true desires in life by asking yourself what you really want from all your connections.

Make no mistake, Redefining Our Relationships is not about the pros and cons of monogamy versus non-monogamy. This is a daring and provocative how-to guide book on radically defined relationships and alternative lifestyles. Wendy-O Matik writes about what she has lived and experienced: open relationships. She believes that open relationships reduce the hazards that accompany unhealthy co-dependency. Open relationships challenge us to confront our jealousy and possessiveness. Committing to a relationship not mapped out by our parents or society or Hollywood means tearing down the very foundation of status quo and conformity. It means redefining and rebuilding your own version of an alternative relationship based on your needs and your values.

The battle against the demonic horde rages on with fifteen blistering new stories, including many sequels from volumes one and two, from all across the multiverse. Make your mark in blood and join the Crimson Pact!

The Crimson Pact Volume 3 features fifteen action packed and frightening short stories, including, “That Which We Fear” by New York Times bestselling author Larry Correia, and Steven Diamond, which features Diego Santos, a bad ass marine who knows the exact time of his death, and Jarvis “Lazarus” Tombs, a federal agent who investigates the paranormal, and has the strange habit of coming come back from the dead. “The Ronin’s Mark” by Donald Darling is a story from an arch demon’s point of view and provides a fascinating study of what happens when a demon becomes too close to the world he is trying to destroy. “Whispers in the Code” by Patrick M. Tracy uncovers the sinister truth about the secrets found inside the internet, and those trying to stop the end of days. “Stumble and Fall” by Isaac Bell tells a tale of his famous character, John Olshoe, who recalls a time when he failed to be the hero. “Singe, Smolder, Torch, Whither” by Eric M. Tracy is about a depraved customer who will do anything for the sullen barrista he’s fallen in lust with. “Monsters on the Trail” by Patrick S. Tomlinson shows us what happens when investigators find out a demon may be involved with a political campaign. “David in Disguise” by Kelly Swails takes us to a 1960’s Chicago protest march where a young woman, who wants to be a journalist, finds out she may have to join the family business after all . . . and hunt demons. “Fallout from My Former Life” by Valerie Dircks proves that a young woman can never escape her past, especially at her high school prom. “The Recruit” by Craig Nybo profiles the boxing champion, Micky Atlas, in what may be his last fight . . . on Earth. EA Younker gives us a steampunk apocalypse story, “Fight” where the rebels steal an airship and take the battle to the demon-possessed bots who have destroyed their world. “The Third Eye” by Chanté McCoy tells the tragic story of a failed Greek Orthodox priest in the early 1900’s, who is unable to convince his countrymen that the demons are indeed coming. “A Contract Between Thieves” by Stephanie M. Lorée is one of the most entertaining stories in the anthology and is set in a “Italian Renaissance steampunk meets traditional sword & sorcery world” and features a rogue named Feni, and her lover, Raf, and their travails after Feni accepts the absolutely wrong job—that feels so right. “Shen Llamo’s Daughters,” takes us on a trip to Tibet in a time when the old customs of the mountain people, typified by pragmatic Yumi, battle with the new religion of Buddhism, and demonic spirits roam a haunted valley in the Himalayas. “The Scarlet Cloak” by Karen Bovenmyer, which book-ends this collection and will not soon be forgotten, is about a young woman who takes revenge on her enemies by using an artifact of terrible power that may consume her in the end, or perhaps it will set her true self free.

Net Impact

Dick Thornby is not Hollywood’s idea of a spy.

In his rough and tumble job there are no tailored Italian suits, no bimbos eager to please, and no massive underground fortresses built by evil overlords seeking world domination—just an endless series of sinister threats to the safety and security of the billions of mundane citizens of the planet. Sure, Dick’s tough and he knows a few tricks to help him get out of a tight spot, even if his boss accuses him of over-reliance on an abundance of explosives. But he’s also got a mortgage, a wife upset by his frequent absences on "business" trips, and an increasingly alienated teen-age son who spends way too much time playing in gaming worlds on the computer.

When a mission to bust up an arms exchange in New Zealand goes spectacularly bad, ending with the showy destruction of the Dunedin port facility, Dick is thrown into a maze of conflict involving Hong Kong arms dealers, cyber-criminals, Chinese government goons attempting to suppress computer access by dissidents, and even militant Maoris seeking rocket launchers to shoot down tourist-laden jumbo jets. Then a young computer expert back at the Philadelphia headquarters for The Subsidiary, an international espionage agency created in the aftermath of 9/11, discovers that the bad guys are involved in a vast conspiracy. Dick is forced to partner with the espionage neophyte to battle evil on multiple fronts, leading to a final confrontation that incorporates real-world conspiracy theories and cutting-edge technology.

In the end, Dick Thornby can save his partner, save his marriage, save his son, or save the world, but he can’t do it all.
