Dr. Alastair J. Gill

I am a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Sociology, University of Surrey, working on the Qlectives EU-FP7 project. Previously I was Research Scientist at the Center for Technology and Social Behavior and The Laboratory for Collaborative Technology, Northwestern University working with Professors Justine Cassell and Darren Gergle, and before that Faber Post-Doctoral Research Fellow working with Robert M. French at the National Centre for Scientific Research - Laboratory for the Experimental Study of Learning and Development (LEAD-CNRS), University of Burgundy (Université de Bourgogne), France.

My research examines social and psychological aspects of communication, especially with reference to computer-mediated technologies which minimise the availability of extralinguistic cues. In these environments, people are forced to rely on purely linguistic means, both for communicating themselves effectively, and also for perceiving the other person.

In particular, a major area of my research has been investigating the projection and perception of personality in computer-mediated communication, using data-intensive methods.
