Do you use your smartphone while driving? If you do, then the iOnRoad will help you drive safe. This smartphone app, from Picitup, makes use of the device’s camera and sensors, to locate vehicles on the road. iOnRoad is the first wide-scale use of computer vision available as a mobile driving app.

The company announced the app during the Israel Mobile Summit and it bagged the first price in the Israel Mobile Summit Startup Contest. What it does is, it maps the road in front of you and you can see a real-time view of the road on your screen. If you are in a sticky situation, the app sounds the alarm and gives you both an audio and visual warning. Using phones during driving has become the norm these days and so a considerable increase in road accidents can be noted.

The iOnRoad app can be used in either the ‘Augmented Reality’ mode, similar to the HUD system that pilots use to display mission critical information or the ‘Background’ mode, where the application can run behind another app, only alerting when it needs to warn the driver of danger. This setting allows users to access their GPS or use their loudspeaker.

Unfortunately, this app works only on Android-based smartphones. So devices running other operating systems will need to wait for the app to bring out the upgraded version. We expect that to happen this summer. Users fasten your seat belts, switch on the app and drive safely.
