In our current anti-intellectual climate, we want INSTAL to be different: intelligent without being academic, popular without being populist. INSTAL will present and examine (with you, not at you) challenging and radical music; music is about more than just music.

Thrilling performances, dry humour, extremes of volume/ silence, immersive environments, sexual intrigue, permutations of kicks 'vs' contemplation and emotion 'vs' intellect, confounded expectations and more besides…

UNINSTAL was Arika's Part A / taster / precursor to the main 2010 INSTAL festival at Tramway that will take place in November. UNINSTAL featured events with leading questions that test ideas and take risks. Attempts at answers came from Taku Unami, Eric La Casa, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Ultra-red, Strickland Distribution, Christian Bök, Craig Dworkin, JLIAT, Loïc Blairon as well as the attendant audience. We asked people to expect: baffling experimental metal, unlistenable silence, language games, sound poetry, anti-understandability, urban organising, bare knuckle improvisation, uncreativity, everyday sound, anti-gentrification, radical field recording, conceptual writing, organised listening and absurd humour. Kill Your Timid Notion, DCA and Arika's festival of experimental image, sound and dialogue was a week-long chance to spend time together, see lots of films and performances, drink lots of tea, use lots of pens, ask lots of questions and get involved in lots of discussions. The 2009 edition of the festival took to the vaulted Glasgow University Chapel for an evening or organ performance on the Friday evening including Hermann Nitsch. Back at The Arches, sold out crowds on the Saturday loved Tetsuo Kogawa and Joan La Barbara and the Sunday saw the joyous culmination of Phil Minton's Century FC choir project amongst a host of other great performances.
