Cool Workspaces

May 9, 2007 by Oli · 68 Comments

Designers need somewhere great to work to do their best work – be it a desk with 4 huge screens and a mountain of technical equipment or a laptop sat in your garden it helps the creative process along. Here we scour the internet for examples of workspaces; some good, some bad, some cluttered, some clean – we take a nosey at where we people are doing their work …

Today’s post is due to the fact that I have recently acquired a larger room which I will be moving my office into, and I need a bit of inspiration. Having looked at hundreds of workspaces on Flickr and other sites, one really stood out for me so this is crowned as the best workspace. It belongs to Jacob Dehart, vice president of Threadless.com :

I tend to prefer less space for some reason.
So the pictures above with real tight space are enticing to me.

This is my Work Space at the cube farm I call work.

I dont necessarily think that you have to spend loads to have a stylish office – for instance I plan to build my next desk – I like to have a really big desk and it would be too expensive to buy what I have in mind.

See this post for how to create your own desk : www.cameronmoll.com/archives/000058.html

    Nice blend of spaces!
Oli’s got a point. Some imagination can create a great environment. Building your own desk sounds like a good project. Check this out: www.rawprojects.org/html/materials.html

Even though the Mac platform represents a tiny overall share of the computer market, these very stylish spaces seem to be over-represented by Apple users. My theory is that people who choose to buy a Mac tend to be more style-conscious than their PC counterparts. That’s not to say that PC folks don’t know style. Just to say how interesting to see people who appreciate aesthetics disproportionately buy Macs compared to the overall market and that it’s reflected in how they arrange their work environments.

    Gary Horsman –

I think it’s more likely that people who can afford Apple computers and peripherals are more likely to be able to have a huge office with only a small desk in the corner.

Thanks for the inspiration. I’m struggling to organise my home office and this has given me some great ideas.

I love the one with the glass walls and fantastic view and also the outdoor one with the view of the pool. But, anything would be an improvement compared to what I have now.

wow this was really inspiring! i like the one where the entire room is empty apart from a massive tv and an L shaped desk thats really clean and tidy.

no clutter means less to confuse the workflow!
