The Office of the Chancellor and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion recently announced the creation of two new annual award programs to honor IUPUI faculty members for their efforts to promote diversity on the IUPUI campus and within the larger community.

The Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Multicultural Teaching will acknowledge faculty who integrate culturally relevant content into their curriculum, employ an inclusive, student-centered approach to teaching, and who champion diversity as an asset for ensuring student academic success.

The Chancellor’s Diversity Scholar Award will honor a faculty member who creates, maintains and demonstrates to the campus and larger community the ability to infuse a common thread of diversity in his/her scholarship and service.

Dr. Kenneth Durgans, Assistant Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at IUPUI, credited the Multicultural Teaching Community of Practice group with crafting the awards. Members of the group are Kathy Grove esq. and Drs. Jennifer Thorington-Springer, Khadija Khaja, Gina Gibau, Leslie Ashburn-Nardo and Silvia Bigatti.

This came about through a collaboration between the Multicultural Teaching Community of Practice group, the Office of Academic Affairs, and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Durgans noted.

“These new awards are intended to recognize faculty members who have made outstanding efforts to serve and enrich the intellectual vitality of the campus and the broader community,” Durgans said. “These honor and recognize members of the University teaching staff who have incorporated multicultural and global perspectives into their scholarship, teaching practices and research. Let it be known that excellence and diversity are synonymous!”

Recipients of the 2011 faculty diversity awards will be honored at the Chancellor’s Honors Convocation on April 29, 2011. Both awards include a cash prize of $3,000.

All IUPUI faculty, full or part-time, are eligible for nomination for the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Multicultural Teaching. Any full-time tenured or tenure track faculty member is eligible for the Diversity Scholar Award.

Nominations for the 2011 awards are open now through Jan. 14, 2011. Self-nomination is not permitted. Preference will be given to faculty members with either at least five years or more of diversity impact at IUPUI or with a history of relevant diversity efforts prior to employment at IUPUI.
