With the International Geneva Motor Show coming up in March, Toyota plans to showcase two very different concept cars. Small and sporty seems to be the theme for the Japanese auto maker when they plan to display the FT-86 and the i-Road.
The weather tends to be cold in Switzerland during March, so it is doubtful the Europeans will immediately appreciate the FT-86, a convertible version of the Scion FR-S. However, the rest of the warm climate world should be eagerly looking forward to the opportunity to drop the top down on this topless concept of the popular FR-S sports car. The fact that we see rear seats in the conceptual drawings leads us to believe that this convertible will seat four, a big advantage over many of its competitors in this category. Our sources tell us that this car will become a reality and hit the showroom floors by early 2014.
First we had the BMW i-series and then Apple Computers developed i-everything else. Now, Toyota will borrow the “i” while introducing its i-Road concept. Perhaps the designers at Toyota were thinking they would need a vehicle to tackle the Swiss Alps. The i-Road looks to accomplish that feat with its bobsled looking design based on three wheels. Besides the artist rendition, the only other information Toyota revealed about the i-Road is that it will be “a compact, fun and emissions-free personal mobility concept, designed to be a quick and efficient urban transportation for two people.” With its one-plus-one tandem seating layout, the i-Road concept car gives new meaning to “backseat driver”.
