The KBMOD Uplink: February 12, 2013 – Magrunner, Wolfenstein, New Batman

A wild Uplink appears! We had a bit of break between real life pressures and some actual news posts on Daylight and DayZ. We are back though and without further ado, lets get right to the links!

-Tomb Raider is being rebooted and comes out on the unfortunate date of March 5th (the same day as Maxis’ SimCity reboot). If you want a preview of the new title starring Lara Croft and company you can check out 11 minutes of footage below. This is a walk through of a level and includes one of the strangest cover systems I’ve seen.

-Retrogamers hold on to your hats. The first signs of possible Legacy of Kain and Wolfenstein games have appeared. Joystiq found a new freshly registered domain for Wolfenstein and PCGamer notes that Machinegames (a Zenimax subsidiary) are working on an as-yet-to-be-named id Tech 5 powered shooter. Meanwhile, it appears Square Enix bought the domain ‘warfornosgoth.com’ (Nosgoth being the setting for the game), fueling hope for a new Legacy of Kain title.

-Do you like Portal? Do you like Antichamber? Do you like Lovecraftian tentacles? I may have found the game for you. Magrunner is a new puzzle game with elements of all three. You know what? It is hard to fully explain this game in this space, so go check out a hands-on preview from PCGamer.

-Tribes: Ascend has seemingly fallen under the radar to the power of the MOBA. Hi-Rez has been moving further away from supporting the game in-favor of Smite. Now though, Hi-Rez is making a somewhat bold move for Tribes, one that we will probably discuss on the podcast. Starting February 15, there will be an all-in-one purchase option for Tribes. That means for one flat rate, you can unlock everything in the game. Is this okay for a free-to-play game? What do you think?

-Rejoice Batman fans! Warner has confirmed that there will be a third Batman Arkham title coming in 2013. After two universally acclaimed (and KBMOD favorite) titles in Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, we can only hope for good things. Rumors are saying this would be a prequel to Arkham Asylum, but nothing has been confirmed. Keep your eyes out for more information on this story.

Well written, This is an awesome article.

Also HiRez really proved themselves as money grabbers to me. T:A should have had a available flat rate purchase from the start. Another potentially competitive Fps got buttfucked by greed.

I don’t think that they were money grabbers at all, I just think they could have managed the game better in the early-mid stages of its life cycle. Perhaps there was too much emphasis on the guns and classes and the cost of these. If there were more cosmetic items that were worth more money and the guns and equipment were less money (and in game currency), then perhaps more players would have stayed and it would have had a greater appeal too. I would call this an intentional money grab however as I don’t think they foresaw the rather rapid decline of the game, hindsight is 20:20.

I do in fact mean ‘I wouldn’t call it a money grab’ in the final sentance,
