Governance

MeeGo™ is an open source project created by merging the Moblin and Maemo software platforms, and is led by the MeeGo Technical Steering Group (TSG). The governance model is based on meritocracy and the best practices and values of the Open Source culture. The MeeGo project lives under the auspices of the Linux Foundation.

MeeGo is open to all contributors

There are no admission processes, contracts, or membership fees for MeeGo, just your desire to join the project and contribute.

Any individual or organization can join and get involved in software development. We also welcome other ways of contributing to the success of the project, including writing documentation, testing, and marketing.

MeeGo leadership and governance principle is based on meritocracy, much in the same way as with the Linux kernel or many other Open Source projects. This means that various team or function leaders and subsystem maintainers are selected based on the quality and quantity of their contribution to MeeGo in relevant areas.

MeeGo platform development - programs, maintainers, developers, etc

MeeGo software is developed and designed in a collaborative effort by an open community of professionals and volunteers. A complete device software stack, including all the power and functions we are used to in today's PCs and smartphones, requires the coordinated effort of hundreds of people. For this purpose, MeeGo has a dedicated structure of roles and responsibilities.

For example, there is a team of distribution development people responsible for designing and maintaining certain subsystems, packages or hardware platform configurations. There is a team of quality assurance people responsible for developing and executing certain testing programs to validate releases and compliance. And there are program managers responsible for driving and coordinating the bi-annual delivery of MeeGo core OS and various device category-specific UX profile releases, just to give a few examples. The following diagram is used to describe the main teams, including the leaders appointed so far:

Working Groups

The day-to-day operations of the MeeGo programs are steered by a number of working groups, which are delegates of the Technical Steering Group. The working groups are devoted to strategic discussions in specific areas and are accountable to provide input and guidance about requirements, direction, policies, and conflict resolution, within their area of responsibility. These working groups are open to maintainers and other individuals and organizations that specialize in the domain of the specific group. Learn more about how the working groups operate by reading the Working Group Process documentation.

Currently, we are in the process of starting working groups in following areas:

  • Netbook
  • Handheld
  • In-Vehicle
  • Connected TV

Technical Steering Group

The Technical Steering Group sets the direction, tone, and vision for MeeGo, speaks on behalf of the project, and is responsible for project level decisions and overall leadership. Much like most open source projects governed by a benevolent dictator, the MeeGo project will be led Imad Sousou (imad.sousou@intel.com) and Valtteri Halla (valtteri.halla@nokia.com). Their role includes resolving disputes and issues when no agreement can be reached otherwise.

The Technical Steering Group's range of responsibilities also includes creating and dissolving working groups to support the fulfillment of the project objectives, appointing subsystem maintainers and operational leaders, setting technology vision, and defining policies and compliance programs.

The Technical Steering Group meets once every two weeks. These meetings are public and open to all. Minutes of the TSG meetings are also public and available at TSG meeting logs.
