Welcome to my web site,
I am Research Associate at KMi (Knowledge Media Institute), The Open University, in Milton Keynes (UK), working with Simon Buckingham Shum in the Collective Intelligence Project.
My research focuses on the socio-technical factors influencing the design and uptake of Online Deliberation and Collective Intelligence infrastructures. These are online systems which seek to improve collective awareness of the changing environment, and collective capacity to makesense of complex issues, particularly with regards to collaborative decision-making processes in the Environmental and Urban Planning domain.
I have particular interests in knowledge construction through discourse, and the role of technology in scaffolding dialogue and argumentation in contested domains, in which there is more than one point of view.
The approaches I work with are network-centric, modelling and visualizing ideas and arguments as networks of nodes which can be analysed for topographical and semantic patterns.
To know more about my interests in Online Deliberation and Collective Intelligence below you'll find links to the workshops I co-chaired and organised from 2008 to now:
MePK 2008 "Managing e-Participatory Knowledge: Perspectives, Methods and Systems for Planning"
ESSENCE 2009 Escience/Sensemaking/ClimateChange tools workshop at Essence09
ODET 2010: "Online Deliberation Emerging Tools" workshop in conjunction with the Fourth International Conference on Online Deliberation.
CSCW2012 "Collective Intelligence as Community Discourse and Action" workshop in conjunction with CSCW2012
- the next workshop that we are putting together for CHI2013 will tackle issues of "Large-Scale Idea Management and Deliberation Systems" (in course of submission)
As background I am a Civil Engineer, with a Master Transport planning, a second master in Environmental Policy and Management and a PhD in Environmental and Urban Planning. My research interests have always circled around technologies supporting knowledge representation, structuring and management, particularly with regards to collaborative decision-making processes in Environmental and Urban Planning domain. My PhD centred on tracing the "memory" of a collaborative process of design. Please click the Research link for further info on the PhD dissertation.
Also,
I am part of the Hypermedia Discourse group, Global Sense Making (GSm) network and of the Compendium team.
Here beside you find my contacts.
