The Joint Aeronautical Logistics Commanders Group (JACG) has been working to improve the management of aviation Critical Safety Items (CSIs) across the military services, defense agencies, and civil agencies. CSIs are aviation parts whose failures have catastrophic implications. Because of the consequences of failure, CSIs require discipline life-cycle management.  The JACG has issued refined guidance for procurement, management, and disposal of CSIs.

Critical Application Item:  An item that is essential to weapon system performance or operation, or the operating personnel as determined by the military Services (DLAI 3200.1).

These items include flight/safety critical, life support, critical safety items (CSI), and nuclear hardened.  While there may be separate processes for each subject of critical application items ... the bottom line is that they should be managed as critical application items.

The management of critical Items with unique supplier qualifications, material / manufacturing process requirements and often extensive testing is a complex process.  There is no room for unauthorized exceptions from specified procedures.  Our customers require weapons system (WS) parts that will perform as intended 100 percent of the time.  Anything less represents a serious compromise to safety of equipment and personnel.

The Critical Item Procurement Requirements Document (CIPRD) covers the technical requirements of the item specified in the solicitation or contract. CIPRDs are being updated with new links which will be available in the near future.    All Military, Federal and commercial/industry specifications and standards appearing on the CIPRD or on any referenced documents, are part of this procurement package to the extent specified and shall be the issue in effect on the date of the solicitation unless otherwise specified.  Material furnished in accordance with the Critical Item Procurement Requirements Document (CIPRD) shall be products authorized by the qualifying activity.

View the Defense Systems Integration Office (DSIO) Listing.  NOTE: It is NOT to be used as a list of approved sources for procuring CSIs.  It is provided for information only.  This list is uploaded in the DSS and is to be used solely by the DDC for screening stock and accepting station returns.  The listing contains sources that are contained on source control drawings, specification control drawings, QPLs and CIPRDs.  Send an email to the Navy CSI POCs if items are found to be missing or in error.

FIRST ARTICLE TESTING (FAT) is required for all Army CSI solicitations. Request for Waivers of FAT may be authorized by the DLA QAS providing the contractor has delivered the same item within the last three years, has no unfavorable quality history, and has not relocated or proposed changes to the processes or changed any subcontractors. All other waiver requests, which do not meet these conditions, shall be forwarded to AMRDEC for consideration if the QAS deems the waiver appropriate.
