The Lower Nasal Base: An Anatomical Study

Rollin K. Daniel, MD; Tibor Glasz, MD, PhD; Gyongyver Molnar, MD; Peter Palhazi, MD; Yves Saban, MD; and Bertrand Journel, MD

Dr Rollin Daniel and his co-authors describe anatomical composition of the columellar base, nostril sill, and alar lobule; discuss the presence of a distinct lower nasal base; and reevaluate the nasal musculature and the nasal superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) in an anatomical cadaver model. The results are discussed of both a detailed literature review and of their own dissection of 45 fresh cadavers.

The Extratemporal Facial Nerve and Its Branches: Analysis of 42 Hemifacial Dissections in Fresh Persian (Iranian) Cadavers

Mohammad Reza Farahvash, MD; Aliasghar Yaghoobi, MD; Benyamin Farahvash, BS; Yashar Farahvash, PharmD; and Shahriyar Hadadi Abiyaneh, MD

In this article, the authors evaluate facial nerve branches in Persian (Iranian) cadavers, propose classification of the extratemporal nerve, determine topography of the nerve using fixed facial points, and define a new fixed point to guide safe facial surgery.

Human Auricular Tissue Engineering in an Immunocompetent Animal Model

Aris Sterodimas, MD, MSc; and Jose de Faria, MD

The authors design and evaluate a novel, 3D cell-copolymer construct resembling a human ear that was subsequently implanted in an immunocompetent rabbit model.

Concepts in Eyelid Biomechanics with Clinical Implications

Clinton D. McCord, MD; Joseph D. Walrath, MD; and Foad Nahai, MD

The inner canthal orbicularis drives spontaneous blinking of the eyelids and is richly innervated by a branching network of twigs. Combined with proper eyelid tension, contraction of this segment of orbicularis results in the normal physiologic blink mechanism. The article demonstrates how to achieve proper eyelid tension and position intraoperatively during the treatment of patients with a range of orbital morphologies.

The Lower Nasal Base: An Anatomical Study

Rollin K. Daniel, MD; Tibor Glasz, MD, PhD; Gyongyver Molnar, MD; Peter Palhazi, MD; Yves Saban, MD; and Bertrand Journel, MD

In the article accompanying this video, Dr Rollin Daniel and his co-authors describe anatomical composition of the columellar base, nostril sill, and alar lobule; discuss the presence of a distinct lower nasal base; and reevaluate the nasal musculature and the nasal superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) in an anatomical cadaver model.. They also discuss the results of both a detailed literature review (for articles related to the levator labii superioris alaeque nasaslis, orbicularis oris, depressor septi nasalis, myrtiformis, and dilator naris) and the results of their own dissection of 45 fresh cadavers. The video shows aspects of these dissections.
