Catching Up

As I dust off things here, I thought it might be good to play a little catch-up as to what I’ve been doing over the past few months, with the aim of actually keeping this blog active. We’ll see how that goes.

  • Bought a house which needed some major updating inside, so we spent a few months working on redoing the walls, ceilings and flooring. We did a lot in that time, but there is still a lot to do, including entirely revamping the kitchen and bathrooms. It’s an ongoing project
  • Just yesterday, we bought a new car! I’ve never owned a new car before, let alone such a lovely one. A 2012 Rav4 Sport.
  • Picked up my camera again. It’s been awhile. I’m eager to get back into photography.
  • Tore my ACL and PCL in my right knee during a derby practice so I was out of things for awhile. It was a good learning experience for me, and a challenge for my patience. Had my first MRI because of it. Fun times.
  • Started hitting the gym regularly, including getting back in the pool and doing some laps. Feels great! Slowly losing the weight I’ve wanted to get rid of for some time.
  • Ran my first 5K in just over 30mins
  • Signed up for a number of other 5Ks, and my first 10K for next year
  • Got to see one of my favourite bands, The Black Keys, live.

Southern Livin’

So, I haven’t been in the South for very long but I have learned two things, so far, about Southern food: 1) It is delicious, and 2) it is the extreme opposite of “health food”. I wonder if point 2 has anything to do with point 1. I’m betting so.

Last night I went out with some girlfriends for a movie (The Expendables) and dinner. It was my first time trying fried pickles (on the left) and hushpuppies (on the right). Hushpuppies are basically fried cornbread balls. Now, cornbread is a new discovery for me and I am loving it, so I was definitely willing to try it fried. I’m usually not big into fried foods to be honest and it seems that in the South everything is “fry-able”. In some cases, I think they may be onto something!

So far, the Southern cuisine that has most caught my fancy is sweet cornbread and biscuits. Mmmm… biscuits. Not the style of biscuits I am used to of course, but delicious and tasty in their own way. It looks like I’m going to have to start hitting the gym a lot more if I plan on staying here.

Back to Basics

The other day I was browsing mags and happened to see “Artful Blogging” in amongst the stacks. It caught my eye so I flipped through it. The imagery I found was beautiful and inspiring and I bought it simply to browse the artwork and photography and hopefully, ideally, be inspired in my work. Once I got home, various magazines in hand of course, I started to actually read the interviews and articles with these creative bloggers. It got me thinking. A lot.
