Tweet-reading economic predictor wins patent

An IU informatics professor who created a tweet tracker that monitors changes in economic conditions has won a patent for the Indiana University Research and Technology Corp. The system, which tracks 500 million Twitter messages per day, calculates mood indicators and makes economic conclusions based on those indicators. Johan Bollen and his Ph.D. student, Huina Mao, first released their research on the system in 2010.
