Tweet-reading economic predictor wins patent
|
|
An IU informatics professor who created a tweet tracker that monitors changes in economic conditions has won a patent for the Indiana University Research and Technology Corp. The system, which tracks 500 million Twitter messages per day, calculates mood indicators and makes economic conclusions based on those indicators. Johan Bollen and his Ph.D. student, Huina Mao, first released their research on the system in 2010.

The City of Bloomington, Bloomington Economic Development Corporation (BEDC), and the Gayle & Bill Cook Center for Entrepreneurship at Ivy Tech-Bloomington have launched a joint effort to develop an entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem action plan for Bloomington and Monroe County. Local historical project Bloomington Fading's new book, "Bloomington Then & Now," is currently on sale in bookstores and online. The book, like its online progenitor, uses photographs and commentary to chronicle "old Bloomington" as it becomes "new Bloomington."
