About CARE’s Work
Mission Statement
CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. Through our community-based efforts focused on empowering women, we work to improve basic education, prevent the spread of disease, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources. CARE also delivers emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters.
CARE has more than six decades of experience delivering emergency relief aid during times of crisis. Our emergency responses focus on the needs of the most vulnerable
populations, particularly poor women and girls. Women
and girls are at the heart of CARE's emergency relief efforts because our experience shows that their gains translate into benefits for families and communities.

Where We Work
In fiscal year 2011, CARE worked in 84 countries, supporting 1,105 poverty-fighting projects to reach more than 122 million people, more than half of whom are women.
CARE not only feeds the hungry, we also help tackle
underlying causes of poverty so that people can become self-sufficient. Recognizing that women and children suffer disproportionately from poverty, CARE places special
emphasis on working with women to create permanent social change.
Our key areas of poverty-fighting work include:
- Helping Children Get Their Education
- Safeguarding Health for Mothers and Families
- Expanding Economic Opportunity
- Ending Gender-Based Violence
- Helping Communities Adapt to Climate Change
- Enhancing Water Access, Use and Management
