Powerway wins contract for 94.5MW South African project

Powerway South Africa, the South African subsidiary of Chinese solar mounting solutions provider Powerway, has been awarded a contract to provide turnkey services for a 94.5MW PV project in De Aar, South Africa.

Under the terms of the contract, Powerway South Africa will supply and install its solar mounting systems and provide turnkey services for the project.

A spokesperson for Powerway South Africa has confirmed to PV-Tech that construction is already underway and will be complete in one year. During the construction phase, the project is expected to create “thousands” of local jobs.

“Thanks to our long-term global business strategy, Powerway has become the first and only enterprise from China to take part in the construction of PV solar projects in South Africa. This status was won against fierce competition with European and USA companies,” said Sherry Shi, CMO of Powerway.

”To ensure that the construction of this large 94.5MW project goes smoothly, we will send an extremely skilled management team to the job site. Powerway’s considerable overseas experience in building solar farms in China, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, and Germany will serve it well in South African solar projects.”

The 94.5MW project is under the control of Solar Capital and will cover a 400-hectare site. In December, GCL-Poly Energy Holdings announced it would arrange the procurement of modules for the project. The modules will incorporate its wafers.

Solar Capital was awarded the project after it became a winning bidder under the first round of the South African government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) Programme which was launched in August 2011.

Under the programme, the government is aiming to procure and install a total of 1.45GW of PV capacity by the end of 2014 over five bidding rounds.
