ICAO and UNWTO Affirm Cooperation on Joint Aviation and Tourism Goals
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and UNWTO signed a special Joint Statement on Aviation and Tourism today, acknowledging the intention of the two UN agencies to begin cooperating more closely on issues of common priority.

UNWTO welcomes travel facilitation measures by Jamaica
UNWTO welcomes Jamaica’s decision to waive visa requirements for Eastern European nationals and to extend indefinitely the current visa waiver system for some Latin American nationals. These important policy steps are in line with UNWTO’s call for countries worldwide to revise their visa regulations and procedures underscoring the close links between visa facilitation and economic growth through tourism.

Indonesia’s future generation pledges tourism leaders to fight climate change
School kids from Pangandaran, Indonesia, have urged global tourism leaders to take climate change seriously. The 451 participants of the Mangrove Ambassadors Programme voiced out through a selection of 24 “Letters to Leaders” how climate change is affecting their daily lives at one of the most popular tourism destinations in Indonesia. The Ambassadors Programme is part of a joint project by UNWTO and the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, supported by  the Government of Germany, to promote climate change mitigation and adaptation measures (6 March, Berlin, Germany).

World Committee on Tourism Ethics praises growing private sector commitment
The Twelfth Meeting of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics commended the UNWTO Private Sector Commitment to the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism Initiative and praised the growing number of signatory businesses who pledged to uphold responsible conduct in the tourism sector (Madrid, Spain, 4-5 March).

UNWTO activities at ITB 2013
UNWTO events at ITB Travel Trade Show 2013 include the 3rd Silk Road Ministers’ meeting and a meeting of the World Tourism Network on Child Protection, as well as the first UNWTO meeting exclusively dedicated to “Tourism and Intangible Cultural Heritage”, among others (Berlin, Germany, 6-10 March, 2013).

First European Sustainable Tourism Observatory under UNWTO auspices opens in Greece
The “Monitoring Centre for Sustainable Tourism Observatories” was inaugurated on the Aegean Islands, the main archipelago of Greece. This first Sustainable Tourism Observatory in Europe under the auspices of UNWTO will monitor the environmental, social and economic impacts of tourism in the archipelago and serve as a model to expand the concept to a national level. Responsible growth and accessibility to be at the heart of tourism development says President of Uruguay accepting the UNWTO/WTTC Open Letter on Travel and Tourism
The President of Uruguay, José Mujica, underscored the need to place responsibility and accessibility at the center of any tourism development. President Mujica stressed the importance of responsible tourism when presented the UNWTO / World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Open Letter on Travel and Tourism. By accepting the Open Letter, President Mujica adds his voice to those world leaders which rally support for tourism as a key for growth and fairer development (Montevideo, Uruguay, 6 February 2013).

French Travel Agents Association SNAV commits to the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics
The French Travel Agents Association – SNAV, les Professionnels du Voyage – has signed the Private Sector Commitment to the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism. With this signing, SNAV  commits to promote sustainable tourism practices, with a special focus on socio-cultural and economic issues (2 February, Tenerife, Spain).
