NEEScomm - Note from the Center Director

NEEScomm Vision: “Transform NEES into a global, cyber-enabled organization for earthquake and tsunami research and education.”

Welcome to NEEScomm and please read below a note from the Center Director.

spacer Many of us have seen first hand how devastating an earthquake can be not only to the infrastructure of a society but also to families, the community and people's sense of security. To mitigate this risk, fundamentally to save lives, the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) originated as a national, multi-user, research infrastructure to enable research and innovation in earthquake and tsunami loss reduction, create an educated workforce in hazard mitigation, and conduct broader outreach and lifelong learning activities.

Effective October 1, 2009, the National Science Foundation and Purdue University entered into a five-year cooperative agreement to manage operations of the NEES experimental infrastructure, a network of 14 earthquake engineering and tsunami research facility sites located at universities across the United States (nees.org).

The NEES operations headquarters is housed at Purdue’s Discovery Park. The NEEScomm (NEES Community and Communications) Team includes partners from the University of Washington, University of Texas at Austin, University of Kansas, San Jose State University, the University of Michigan, and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The team is committed to operating transparently and nurturing stakeholder participation in the management of NEES. We will work together with NSF and the sites to ensure the trust of the stakeholder community.

It is an honor and privilege to serve as the director of the NEES Operations Center. When I look at this impressive array of 14 experimental sites and all the accomplishments of the NEES community since inception, I am humbled and truly thankful for the contributions of the NEESinc staff and volunteers. I will do my best to uphold NEES standards, serve the stakeholder community, contribute to the future of the network, and foster collaboration.
