Tom Metcalf SPD Travel Fund
In consultation with Tom Metcalf's family, the Solar Physics Division (SPD) has established the Thomas Metcalf SPD Travel Fund to help support newer members' expenses for attending meetings relevant to solar physics. The "leave behind" fact sheet used in recent SPD Congressional visits is now available.2013 Hale and Harvey Prize winners announced
George Ellery Hale Prize: The George Ellery Hale Prize is awarded to a scientist for outstanding contributions to the field of solar astronomy.The 2013 Hale Prize is awarded to Richard Canfield for his pioneering work on dynamics and radiation in solar flares and on the origins and implications of magnetic helicity in active regions, as well as his role as a leader and mentor.
Karen Harvey Prize: The Karen Harvey Prize is awarded in recognition for a significant contribution to the study of the Sun, early in a person's professional career.
The 2013 Karen Harvey Prize is awarded to Tibor Torok, for his innovative numerical studies and theoretical analyses of the role of MHD instabilities in the initiation and driving of coronal mass ejections.
