Meadowlands Environment Center Awarded $852,276 NSF Grant
Funding will expand programming for individuals with disabilities.
(Mahwah) - Ramapo College of New Jersey and the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission announced that Ramapo College has received a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant in the amount of $852,276. Ramapo will use the NSF grant to further develop, test and implement its MarshAccess program, a national model for accessibility and assistive technology that adapts science programs for people with disabilities at the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission’s Meadowlands Environment Center.

New Jersey Meadowlands Commission
The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission is the zoning and planning agency for a 30.4-square-mile area along the Hackensack River covering parts of 14 municipalities in Bergen and Hudson Counties in New Jersey.
The NJMC’s campus is located at Richard W. DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst. Constructed in 1982, the NJMC offices became a symbolic and literal barrier between unregulated landfilling and preservation of the Hackensack River’s ecosystem. DeKorte Park includes the Meadowlands Environment Center, an NJMC educational facility operated by Ramapo College of New Jersey, as well as 3.5 miles of trails scenic overlooks, memorial sculptures and an art gallery. It is also home to the Meadowlands Environmental Research Institute (MERI) and Center for Environmental and Scientific Education and William D. McDowell observatory.
Meadowlands Environment Center
The Meadowlands Environment Center was formed to increase awareness and enjoyment of the Meadowlands’ vital ecosystem. The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission and Ramapo College of New Jersey entered into a partnership in 2003 to develop a comprehensive environmental education program for schools and the general public. Together, the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission and the experienced team of educators from Ramapo College encourage the use of the environment as a classroom, increase awareness of the resources of the Meadowlands, and help communities recognize the critical issues that affect the Meadowlands District.
