Join CBOL

Membership in CBOL is open to any organization that's involved in biodiversity or biotechnology. Museums, university departments, government agencies and private companies are signing up as CBOL Member Organizations so that they can be involved directly in the DNA Barcode Initiative. It's easy to become a CBOL Member Organization and there are no financial or other formal obligations. The only requirement is that Member Organizations will place their barcode data records in a public database. By being a CBOL Member, your organization will:

  • Be well-connected to CBOL's Working Groups and other initiatives
  • Have a voice in determining CBOL's priorities
  • Get first-hand information on the latest developments in DNA barcoding
  • Receive regular updates on CBOL's new initiatives
  • Have priority when CBOL activities are over-subscribed
  • Be able to nominate candidates for CBOL's Executive Committee and Scientific Advisory Board

Since the May 2004 inaugural meeting, over 200 organizations from 50 countries and 6 continents have joined the Consortium for the Barcode of Life. However, the original MOC, effective from 1st September 2004 until 1 September 2009, is no longer in effect.

Revised CBOL Memorandum of Cooperation

CBOL's Executive Committee has updated the MoC and now offers it for signature by senior officials of potential Member Organizations. The revised MoC reflects the progress that DNA barcoding has made since 2004, but CBOL membership still involves no legal, financial, or other obligations. The new MoC describes CBOL's mission, goals, and governance structure in greater detail than the previous MoC, as well as CBOL's policies toward sharing of data and patenting of new technologies related to barcoding, while still requiring no legal, financial or other obligations.
