The links below provide some helpful hints on writing.

  • Writing for Computer Science: The Art of Effective Communication, Justin Sobel, Springer 1997. This is a great book, and a bargin at $20! Accessible, easy to read, and lots of specific "words of wisdom" on good writing style in Chapters 3 and 9. The best $20 you will ever spend.
    • Chapters 3 and 9 from above book (password-protected, reserve reading restricted to CNRG students)
  • Top-10 Tips for Writing a Paper (from CoNext 2006 papnel on writing a paper)
  • Writing an Introduction (from an email from Jim to graduate students working on infocom papers)
  • Henning Schulrzrinne's writing page
  • Roy Levin and David D. Redell, "An evaluation of the ninth SOSP submissions -or- How (and how not) to write a good systems paper," ACM SIGOPS Operating Systems Review 17(3):35-40 (July, 1983). More than 20 years old, but timeless and excellent advice.
