Charlie Brown’s grimy neighborhood pal “Pigpen” may look like the kid voted most-likely-to-have-head-lice, but contracting lice has actually little to do with personal hygiene. No matter how often your child cleans his hair or bathes (or doesn’t) these pesky parasites, and their quickly hatching “nits” (or eggs), can crawl their way into your life uninvited. They’re incredibly common: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they climb into the tresses of an estimated 6 to 12 million kids per year.

Do you know how to spot, treat, and prevent them from invading your own family? We asked three pediatricians who’ve seen it all for help, and you’ll find their advice in this 13-question quiz that will nix your concerns about nits.

Question 1 of 13

Lice look like white-gray sesame seeds seen by the naked eye, and their whitish eggs (nits) look like tiny white beads. If you don’t see any lice, but do see some white flakes on your child’s head, how can you tell if they’re nits or dandruff?
