Skolar is a text serif, originally designed with scholarly and multilingual publications in mind. The typeface maintains its credibility while incorporating a subtle personal style, neither neutral nor conspicuous.
Prominent serifs and low-contrast modulation add to its robustness, and, together with a relatively large x-height, improves the typeface’s readability in small sizes. This 10-style family and large character set is flexible enough for complex text settings and editorial work. It also becomes distinctive in bigger sizes, fitting the demands of corporate design.
There have been many practical solutions introduced in the typeface; the capitals are rather low in comparison to the ascenders. This gives the typeface even texture and more space for capital diacritical marks. The structure of the typeface is strictly conventional, but the stroke-modulation stylistically reflects contemporary serif typefaces. The italic has a shallow angle and large counters for better readability in small print. It is easily recognized but not ostentatious, blending well with the uprights. Semibold is weighted to emphasize text blocks, where Bold is intended for word clusters. The family includes a complex set of smart arrows which can be easily keyed and infinitely combined using OpenType features.
Skolar has already received international recognition at the Ed-Awards competition 2008 and was selected as one of the best typefaces of 2008 by i love typography.
Skolar Cyrillic has been designed as a close complement to Latin with the help of the experienced designer and consultant Alexandra Korolkova. The font supports 32 languages using Cyrillic script, besides most of the Slavic languages, many Asian and non-Slavic languages are covered too. It also supports Serbian italic alternates and “new” Bulgarian stylistics. Notably, the Cyrillic was awarded a Special Diploma at the international type design competition Modern Cyrillic 2009 and won the first prize in the Cyrillic text type category at Granshan 2009.
The four core styles of Skolar, have been manually hinted for better screen rendering and cross-platform consistency. Please visit our webfont service partners TYPEKIT - FONTDECK - WEBINK or contact us for self-hosting @font-face.

From 2004 to 2007 he also ran his own design studio DAVI, with projects in graphic, web and interface design.
Back in Brno he is currently working with Tiro Typeworks (Canada) as associate designer.
His interest in non-Latin type design and typography of multilingual and complex texts manifests in the multi-script family Skolar and Surat for Latin and Gujarati, that he started during his MA in Reading. The finalised version is expected to be released through TypeTogether in 2008.
During his time in Denmark, he has also designed the sans serif Codan inspired by the city of Copenhagen. | | | Download PDF |
