American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009

Signed by President Obama on February 17, 2009, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) is changing the face of our nation - physically in terms of improvements to our infrastructure and economically by saving or creating tens of thousands of jobs.

The Federal Highway Administration was instrumental in the success of this landmark legislation. Working with our state partners, we were able to meet the ambitious deadline set by Congress to obligate 100 percent of our Recovery Act funds by a deadline of March 1, 2010. Actually, we beat the deadline by two days!

That means we committed $26.6 billion to more than 12,000 road, highway and bridge projects across the country. In addition to putting our fellow citizens back to work, these projects are making our communities safer, greener, more livable, less congested and economically stronger.

As part of the Recovery Act, the Department also awarded 51 TIGER grants. These grants went to creative projects that really represent the future of our diverse transportation system - everything from regional bicycle networks, to intermodal centers, to commuter rail, to safer highways.

That's an unprecedented achievement for one piece of legislation.

Most of all, the map will give you a visual sense of the true scope of this legislation and the incredible commitment it took to make it a success.

President Obama has said there has never been a program of this scale, moving at this speed, enacted as effectively, and meeting such high standards of transparency and accountability.

To be sure, there is still work to be done. But the Recovery Act is helping lead America to a brighter future.
