History major named Tillman Military Scholar
[06.21.2012]

TAMPA, Fla. -- Stephen Naylor, a senior majoring in history at the University of South Florida, has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship by the Pat Tillman Foundation. Tillman Military Scholars are selected based on a desire to continue to serve others and make a positive impact in their community.

Naylor, originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland, served in the British Army with the Combined Security Transition Command -- Afghanistan, a multinational group whose role is the training and development of Afghan security forces. He met his wife, a member of the U.S. Air Force, in Afghanistan, and moved to Tampa a year ago when she was stationed at MacDill Air Force Base.

Naylor transferred credits from Queens University Belfast, and began studying at USF last year.

“It was clearly the most attractive and best option,” Naylor said of his decision to choose USF. “It’s the flagship college of the Tampa area. I love it here; It feels like home.”

Naylor has a 4.0 GPA, plans to graduate May 2013, and hopes to attend graduate school to focus on Latin American history, eventually moving into teaching. It was Naylor’s wife who suggested he apply for the Tillman Military Scholars program, and the USF Office of Veteran Services worked closely with applicants and the Pat Tillman Foundation throughout the process. After the application essays and interviews, representatives of the foundation along with Larry Braue, Director of Veterans Services at USF, called to congratulate Naylor on being selected.

“It’s humbling; I feel very lucky to be here and privileged to be chosen by the Pat Tillman Foundation,” Naylor said. “I am happy and proud to represent USF.”

Naylor said the USF faculty and staff has been instrumental to his success, from the Office of Veterans Services, to his academic adviser Maura Barrios.

Though Naylor is highly motivated to further his education and career development, he said he is focused on his 15-month-old daughter and being a dad.
