BA—Antioch College, Yellow Springs, OH

Prior to joining Vanderbilt in 2006, Hilary worked for Questia Media, a digital library service, where she developed search and online marketing strategies. Hilary has also held a variety of other roles during her 20 years in libraries. She worked in a knowledge management center at an R&D facility, a museum library, a college media center, and directed a regional public library in Texas. As director of the Walker Management Library, she attempts to meld the rich tradition of libraries with innovative service delivery. She ensures that the Owen community has access to premium information products, a warm and welcoming facility, and a knowledgeable, helpful staff. Originally from New York, she is almost acclimated to the South.

Deborah Brooks

BS—George Peabody College, Vanderbilt University

Deborah manages the daily operations that affect library services. Having attended library school at George Peabody College, Deborah was able to realize a career in academic libraries. In 1988 she brought her experiences as a Senior Library Assistant at the Nashville Public Library and a Program Account Representative at Ingram Book to the Walker Management Library. Deborah has worked in all facets of library service and had increasing roles of responsibility. As a result of her achievements, she was nominated for a Commodore Award in 2005. She cherishes her granddaughters and soon-to-be grandson. She is a sports fan and supports the Vanderbilt programs as a season ticket holder.

Joe’s career with the Vanderbilt libraries began in 1998. He started out at the Walker Management Library and discovered an interest in the library’s climate controlled offsite facility. Having spent 6 years assisting library staff and users with their archival needs at the Annex facility, Joe accepted a position with the Green Hills branch public library in Nashville. In 2006, Joe returned to the Walker Management Library as the Evening Supervisor. In this role Joe provides, supervision of library operations and access including collection maintenance, and manages the library’s Student Assistant workers program. On his days off, Joe volunteers as a substitute teacher for Metro Public Schools.

A native Tennessean, Sara Byrd earned a BA in Fine Arts from Cumberland University and a Master of Library Science degree from Indiana University. She spent two years as a Library Assistant at the Indiana Institute on Disability & Community. She has been with Vanderbilt University since 2006, first working at Central Library as a Reference Librarian, and joined the Walker Management Library team in 2008. Sara is focused on technology support; she is responsible for the library website, manages database access, works on the library service desk, and provides reference support. Sara volunteers with the Southern Festival of Books.

Robbi has over a decade of research experience, both in corporate and library environments. She has worked at the Walker Management Library since 2008 and currently serves as a Reference Librarian, providing reference service to the Owen community as well as developing and maintaining the library’s self-help tools. In addition, she is the Tennessee Library Association Chair of the Reference Roundtable. In her spare time, Robbi is a board member of the Franklin High School Parents Association and manages a Destination Imagination team.

Elaine has always loved and worked in higher education environments, beginning with a position in Student Affairs division at her alma mater. Previously an office assistant for the Director of the Campaign for Vanderbilt under the department of Alumni & Affairs (now Development and Alumni Relations), she came to work in the Walker Management Library in 1995. As the library’s Administrative Assistant, Elaine manages a variety of human resources and administrative processes for staff and student assistants as well as the maintenance of the library facility and all library supplies. In addition, Elaine provides customer service at the library service desk.

Rahn joined Vanderbilt in 2004 with experience in corporate library settings including two Fortune 100 companies. Her background includes the executive search industry, patent and chemistry library research for a polymer company, and economic development for an electric utility. She also owned a successful information management consulting firm for five years. This gives Rahn a deep understanding of the business world and how it works in a number of industries. Her Owen focus is on connecting people quickly with the information they need. Rahn’s claim to fame is being the original researcher/writer for CNN Headline News FACTOIDS. She loves living in Nashville after spending 26 years commuting in Atlanta’s traffic.
