External Participants are postdocs or non-senior scientists at non-DES institutions who have earned permanent data rights (personal data access and/or Builder status) while previously at a DES institution by virtue of infrastructure contributions. They shall have a formal sponsor who is a DES member, e.g., the advisor or supervisor they had while at a DES institution.
External Collaborators are senior scientists from a non-DES institution who could provide the Collaboration with either special expertise or access to resources that would not otherwise be available to the Collaboration, such as access to private telescopes. He or she must be sponsored by a Collaborating Institution. If admitted as an External Collaborator by the Management Committee he or she will be granted limited data access for a specific science project that is closely coupled to a specific DES infrastructure task in exchange for providing their unique skills and resources.
