Starbucks’ approach, knowing that its typical barista is often a teenager with little impulse control, was to embark on a project of changing habits. Duhigg harkened back to a study performed in the 1960s in which four year olds were given a single marshmallow and told that they could have two marshmallows if they could wait ten minutes. The film of the struggling four year olds may be a hilarious visual representation of the challenge of willpower, but longitudinal studies have shown that willpower is the single greatest correlate for success in adult life. Willpower, therefore, is a very important habit to have, or if not possessed innately, then to cultivate.
