Off the beaten path
Far from the tsunami-hit areas on the main island, Wakkanai is Japan's northernmost city, first settled by the indigenous Ainu. The city is home to some sizable parks, museums, and the iconic breakwater dome. Harbour seals have also made their homes here, which visitors can view from an observation deck. Many people use the town as their base to visit Rishin and Rebun Islands, one of Japan's most spectacular natural wonders. (more...)
