StreetPilot turn-by-turn navigation for iPhone »

Garmin finally gets it with StreetPilot, an iPhone app that does turn-by-turn navigation. From Engadget:

It undercuts TomTom’s $49.99 offering for iOS, while offering real-time traffic data, voice commands, lane assist, address book integration so you can navigate directly to your buddies’ addresses, and multitasking support.

Software GPS navigation. The only hardware is the iPhone. The only problem is that Garmin’s maps won’t display if your iPhone doesn’t have a signal.

Should Michael Vick be executed? »

Last week, Fox News analyst Tucker Carlson said NFL quarterback Michael Vick should be executed for torturing and murdering dogs. This week Carlson said he had been too emotional (it’s Fox, so who could tell?). Chris Chase:

I’m watching that (video) clip and thinking, “Hey, for someone who said something idiotic like ‘execute Michael Vick,’ Carlson is making a reasoned argument that both takes back that statement while rationally defending his dislike of Vick.” And then—BAM—he compares the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback to a child molester.

That’s rather standard fare on Fox News.

Viral and Epic consigned to college trash »

Just when you thought you were getting the hang of 21st century lingo, viral, epic, and fail topped the list of 14 words banished by Lake Superior State University.

“Viral,” often used to describe the rapid spreading of videos or other content over the Internet, leads the list for 2011. Runners-up included “epic” and “fail,” often twinned to describe a blunder of monumental proportions.

What else? “Wow factor,” “BFF,” and the use of Facebook and Google as verbs.

Birds falling from the sky in Arkansas »

File this one in the Crazy But True cabinet.

Wildlife officials are trying to determine what caused more than 1,000 blackbirds to die and fall from the sky over an Arkansas town.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said Saturday that it began receiving reports about the dead birds about 11:30 p.m. the previous night. The birds fell over a 1-mile area of Beebe, and an aerial survey indicated that no other dead birds were found outside of that area.

Why?

New Year’s Eve revelers shooting off fireworks in the area could have startled the birds from their roost and caused them to die from stress.

Right. Uh huh.
